ActionScript 3.0 :: Embedded Symbol Communicate With Main Timeline?

i am creating a survey with say 7 questions. each question has the same MovieClip symbol each with a different instance name, like q1, q2, ... q7.
the MovieClip symbol has 5 static texts and 5 SimpleButtons. i have some code in that symbol to make sure that only a single button has the "on" or "checked" state to show that that one is chosen. this works great.
my question is, how do i communicate each user choice with the main timeline after the user hits the "submit" button? or, how do i have code under the "submit" mousedown event that can iterate through the 7 symbols to query each one and see which of the 5 SimpleButtons is "checked" or "on". this iteration will then create a list of responses for all 7 questions.
ultimately, i will have flash concatenate a GET POST string that will send the survey results to a web server.

i am using attachmovie to load a movie clip from library into an empty movie clip. Everything works ok but now i have a problem... i am trying to create a button that is inside this movie clip that goes back to the main timeline on a certain frame and also unload that certain movie clip
I tried all sorts of things but none work...is there a solution to this? Cant a clip that is loaded with attachMovie communicate with main timeline?

How do I link a button thats embedded in frame 2 (music page timeline) to a frame in the main timeline ( frame 3= biography page)? Both pages are on the same scene with link buttons embedded in each page independent timeline.

I've created a movie clip symbol with it's own animation on its timeline. I've placed this symbol onto the first frame of the main timeline but when I test it, it doesn't play. There's no stop actions or anything on either timelines so I'm not sure why this is happening. I thought that the animation in a movie clip symbol will automatically play (i.e. if you test in a browser) once it's on the main timeline - is this right? Or am I doing something wrong. Maybe I need to tell it to play?

Does anyone know a good way to acquire the currentFrame of a movieclip symbol placed on the main timeline? currently there is only 1 frame, but the movieclip has 50.
If i trace currentFrame, i only get 1. and tracing the child name doesnt work either.
I got it to work earlier but it crashed before i got to save and now i cant figure it out. Was something to do with making another movieclip symbol.

What I have is a situation where I need to play some frames on the main timeline, say to frame 5. I place a movie clip symbol in frame 5 which I want to play (all is working fine so far).Once the Movie clip is finished playing, I want the main timeline to start again.In AS2, I would simply put
_root.play();
Now in AS3, I think it should read
root.play();
but I get an error which reads:call to a possibly undefined method play through a reference with static type flash.displayisplayObject

How would I reference a button instance on the main timeline in the actionscript within a movie clip symbol?For example: btn1.addEventListener (MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, main1Over);where btn1 is an instance of a button on the main timeline but is not found within the symbol itself.I will then be dragging that movie clip onto the main timeline when it's finished.

I have spent many frustrating hours trying to figure out why this is happening. It is totally broken. I need to use a motion path using 3d in a symbol. Because of the way the project is put together (for Flex) there are several FLAs that need to be converted to symbols.
So when I convert the FLA that contains a motion path with 3D, the object moves away from the path in the symbol (the 1st frame remains in place, but everything else is off the path), even though it remains correct in the main timeline.
And once I start editing the object in the symbol, the object returns to the path ok, as if it had been some strange display issue, but the 3D is all wrong - the vanishing point relative to the object has changed. The same thing happens whether I create the 3D path using "global" or "local" tool settings.

I have my flash document set up in the following way: On the main timeline I have my buttons that I want to play movie clips embedded inside a movie clip on the main timeline.However, when I click each different button, the current movie clip stops playing and then the movie clip corresponding to the button plays.
I want them all to be able to play at once. So for example you push button 1 and the alien plays, but half way through you could click button 2 and the alien clip would keep playing, but also the helicopter clip would begin to play as well.Here is the code I have so far:

I'm working on a game where the the engine is made in AS3, yet the interface is made in AS2. Basically I am embedding the GUI as a AS2 .swf into my main AS3 .swf. I want the AS2 GUI to be able to communicate with it's parent. Small Interface calls like Pause, Unpause, Upgrade.I tried to use External Interface, but I can't seem to get it to work. I know it's made for Javascript, but I thought that it would work just as well with AS2 to AS3.I'm able to edit the Interface file and have the FLA for it. It'd just be a real pain converting it... It'd take way to long to convert the FLA to AS3, talking weeks here, it's rather large.

I'm programming my game using Flash Builder 4, in an "ActionScript project". I'm not using Flex. I want to build my menus and cutscenes in Flash Professional, then export them as SWF and embed them into my final project.Embedding the SWFs works fine, I do something like this:

My problem is that I can't access the buttons and other elements of the SWF that I need to communicate with and manipulate. For example, the main menu will have a "Play" button. I need to know if that button has been pressed. The level select screen will have a "Best Time" text field, that should show the player's best time on a level - this text needs to be set. But I can't figure out how to access these things.
I don't think that the children of the MovieClip are visible within my Actionscript project - it seems like the SWF is loaded in as one big "chunk" that can't be interacted with (it plays fine though).So what is the best way to interact/communicate with an embedded SWF? I've found a bit of information on the topic, but usually people are talking about using Flex or loading in external SWF (which seems to behave different from embedding). Is there even a way to do this?

I am comming from AS2, obviously. I have looked at many of the post people have to get "something" to be avaialble on a root type method, but I haven't found anything that has worked for this yetFor those who are saying "you're missing the point", and the rest of the "this is a bad idea" or "not needed" comments would you mind detailing the process of making a variable avaiable from a subMovie to a mainMovie and from mainMovie back to subMovie; or changing the property to an object inside of a SWF that has been added to a movie using addChild()?These are the constraints I have to work within. I can't restructure the 100-150 some odd pieces that are already in existance using AS3. New funtionality is needed that requires communication between the two movies.

I have created a online portfolio that loads in External swfs. Everything works fine on its own but once the external swf is loaded into the containing swf I lose control of the external swfs timeline. Is this a bug or is there just something I am forgetting

So when I click the send button it sends the message, but does not go to the next frame. It works on its own but won't work once loaded into another swf.

How do I get a targeted mc to communicate with the parent timeline? I'm not using levels but targeted mc.
I need the playback head to go from the targeted movie clip (this is called nested, correct?) to the parent timeline and stop at a particular movie instance or frame label. I have been unsucessfully using this:

is there a way to communicate (transfer variables) from the timeline in flash9 to an external .as file? ive tried making a movieclip symbol in flash and making a external class file for it(and then linked the 2 together) but when i try to get code from the first frame in the timeline to work with variables in the actionscript class file, it doesnt work.specificly what im trying to accomplish is a menu that i can access to change variables while my movie is playing.

I have a file comprised of 1 scene and two movie clips. The clips are instanced into the Main Timeline and occupy Frames 1 and 2 respectively.MovieClip1 is an animation that has navigation buttons that appear at the end of the clip. I'm trying to get mouse click navigation to make Frame 2 on the Main Timeline active.
Here is what I'm trying but it is not working:

I'm having some problem with the workflow of flash.I make web banners everyday att my work att it is important to me to have the banners easy structured so I can copy effects, tweens and symbols to a new banner. I have Flash CS3 pro.I always start by making a symbols. And then in the symbols own timeline I make the animation or effect.
The big problem I'm having is when I have the main (scene1) timeline with many frames, and then have symbols on that timeline, with it's own timeline with some frames. The frames in the symbol timeline is okey, but at the main timeline the frames is too short or too long so the animation of the symbol cuts of early or it plays more than one time (too many frames).
How do I calculate how long a symbols timeline should be so It maches the main timeline?What happens to me is that I always have to adjust the symbols timeline and the main timeline, and this I have to do many times.

I have a main.fla which has 3 movieclips inside it. All 3 mc's have timelines that run 40 frames. The main.fla timeline has each mc instance on a frame. mc_1 is on frame 1 mc_2 is on frame 40 mc_3 is on frame 81 as the main timeline plays the clips each one fades to the other. I need to know how to target this scenerio after mc_3 plays I need to have a goToAndplay (20) set up so the animation inside mc_1 starts playing (frame 20) of mc_1.
