I don't really know what is wrong with the script...

ActionScript Code:
port_BTN_0.addEventListener (MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, rolloverMCfunc);
function rolloverMCfunc(event:MouseEvent):void

So, basically I am making a mc to come inside the stage (rolloverMC_0) when I rollover over another MC (port_BTN_0). But when i rollout, it doesn't seem to work and it gives an error.

On my main timeline I define a variable and it works:

In a child movie clip I try to recall the variable and it
traces "undefined":

I must be missing something small, but it sure makes a difference. My array contains five states each with an abbreviation (abr, such as "NJ", "NY") and either enabled or disabled (hot, either "true" or "false"). When I do a trace within the function itself, it brings back an accurate array.length. But, after this function, I can't recall the data at all! Its as if it only exists during the load function.

now when you first look at this code.. it looks perfectly fine right? .. well if you use this exact code and place a clip on the stage with an instance name of 'mc' .. publish and rollover 'mc'... the trace statement does not show.. is there something I never read about with respect of creating functions inside if statements??

I would think you could use the function name(){ syntax.. and not be forced to using variableName = function(){ syntax in creating functions inside if statements..

Actionscript 3.0 :: Accessing SetInterval() ID Created Within A Function

I am creating a text scroller and am having problems with clearInterval - the text starts scrolling, but it won't stop after I try to clear it upon a button click.

1. I declare a var (uint) equal to a setInterval() call within a function (if the text exceeds the width of the textField)

2. I have a button that "turns off" the mp3 player (swf) and resets all the text fields.

3. I can't seem to access the setInterval ID var from within the click handler.

I have declared the var (uint) at the root level, then set it to setInterval() within the function. Then I tried to access it from the click handler. I thought this would work since it's global at that point, but it doesn't.

wrote a couple of small games using AS 2.0. One of the things I found easiest about AS 2.0 is that a MovieClip created using _root. attachMovieClip() inside of one function was accessible to every other function. For instance:

This causes an error, because the MovieClip variable was declared inside of a function and when the function ended, the MovieClip variable was erased. Is there any way of doing this without declaring the MovieClip variable outside of the function? I want to be able to create an unknown amount of these movieclips on the fly, so I can't just declare them outside of the function.

i wanna write a function for the onPress handler for a movieclip that will be created dynamically.. how do i do it? this is what i'm doing:

only the ending part of this loop is relevant, where i am writing the thisMC.onpress function. The trace text never appears..

What I'm trying to do is setup a function that shoots through a set of buttons within a subset and creates click code for these buttons.

THe three variables are the identifiers for the actual keyframe i wish to jump to, the movieclip in which i want to perform the action and the actual button to go to the right frame.

Presently the problem I'm having is that the variables aren't stored when the onRelease functions are created, so they all are just calling the LAST variables declared.

Now I've dynamically created some buttons using XML. They're spread around the stage and I've modified a tooltip script to give each button a tooltip on Mouse_Over. But to se the logic and make it work using AS3 is hard (for me). I want a function that accept to parameters: Tooltip text and  Object to tooltip. In my code I get this error msg when initiating the function on dynamically created buttons: 1118: Implicit coercion of a value with static type flash.display:Sprite to a possibly unrelated type flash.display:MovieClip. I beleive there are more than one thing here needing a fix.

I have only one question but phrased it 3 ways:

1) Is it better to pre=render things say in photoshop or have flash render them?

2) if I have a field of stars that drift along; is it better to create that Star Field in photoshop as a single picture (say a .png) or to create a star in my library and add it to a movie clip and then have that drift along?

Lets say I have a blur effect on my stars and have an equivalent on the photoshop.

3) I have heard (and experienced) adding effects like blur takes a fair amount of CPU and memory so was wondering if I created the effect in photoshop and then imported the 'blurred' object into my flash if I could cut down on system resources?

im trying to do is have a button that shows an animation (created by a duplicateMovieClip function) with onRollOver and stops the animation with onRollOut. It works when i roll over and it stops when i roll out, but then it continues in a loop up to the point where i rolled out (instead of cutting off completely as i would like). When an instance variable is constructed by a constructor method, why do you need to refer to the current instance variable being created when its the only one being created? I understand assigning an expression to it but why name it "this." when it is the only object that the constructor is building? Does it have some hing to do with being able to naming that object in the Local Variable? In other words am I creating a generic object that will be named in another class?

I'm dynamically creating movieclips with dynamically created movieclips inside them and am having trouble with targeting them.Below is a simplified example of what I'm trying to achieve, in the real file there are a lot more movieclips and I'm creating and naming them with a for loop.

This one is just one Sprite created inside another sprite. I can target the top level sprite named "testname". However when i try target the nested MC it throws an error.The bottom couple of traces are just test MCs I've made to make sure i got the syntax right, on targeting nested movieclips.
