Professional :: Make A Circular Dial, Point At The Mouse Position While Staying Locked To It's Location?
Jul 23, 2010
I trained on flashMX back in the day and haven't done anything since so now I've got CS5 it's a bit like being at school again! I have a circular dial sat in the middle of the screen with an arrow placed on it's edge. How do I get the dial to rotate so it always faces the mouse pointer?

I have recently followed a tutorial to make a movieclip in flash that makes buttons spin around a point depending on the mouse position. I have made my own version off this and would like to use it in a full flash website that i am making at the moment.
The only problem that i am having is with aligning this clip and as it is made up of script i cant physicly drag it to were i want it. I understand how to alighn this with x/y positioning but when i preview the flash in a web browser it is positioned correctly but then when i 'full screen' the browser this clip jumps about 4 inches down the page.

OK I have been racking my brain to get this resolved and unfortunately there isn't a lot of info on the web. Scenario: We are in a shared environment. Central file server (Mac OS X server) over gigabit enet. We open flash files over the network and then we "try" to publish the files back to the same server in which the .fla is stored. (I have read John at Adobe's comments on the practice but this DID work).
So we access the flash file at /Volumes/ServerName/JobFolder/~Flash/ and we "attempt to" publish the .swf to /Volumes/ServerName/JobFolder/htmlfolder/flash .... this was working previously in flash 6-7 but in 8-cs3 it has stopped working and we are kicking ourselves to get some answers. When we try to publish we get the following error: "Error creating Flash movie file. Be sure the destination is not locked or on a locked drive. Also, check that the file name is not too long."

Flash knows where the anchor point is in 3D space in order for the symbol to rotate around it, but I can't seem to figure out how to see the coordinates of the anchor point or type in new ones. Please tell me how to do this. I am already very annoyed that Lynda, a pay service, doesn't think this is vital information. Apparently they think we would never want to do anything more visually stimulating than one simple spinning logo! But I digress...
Just to be clear, I know how to move the anchor point visually on the stage, but I want accuracy. I want to be able to give two symbols the exact same coordinates to rotate around.

I am trying to make an animation where the user can mouse over a small MC at the top of the stage, which controls the movement of another larger MC at the bottom of the stage.I am thinking that 'points' (which I know nothing about) might be the way to go. The other thing is that it needs to be fluid motion. Am I at least on the right track with points and mouse_move or is there a better approach for this?

Alright, so I've been struggling with this one since last night. When I create a new object (a new unit), and draw it to the screen (Flash does all the work there), the point at which it's first placed is considered its origin. That is, getX and getY will return the distance from that point... Why is that? Or how can I stop this?

I want to recreate the same effect (this has been done) but with a little twist, and I do not know how to code the mask with Action Script.What I want to achieve is this:
1. Lock my mask on the Y axis;
2. When I mouse over it, the mask would move up and down;
3. The mouse cursor would disapear while being in the mask.
My flash file is almost complete. I just need the code to move the mask.

I recently came across a small business site that had a homepage with there logo and some basic nav in the center with the business logoBut there entire background had a moving flash background made up of photos in the shape of words, that when you moved your mouse to the left, the background would move to the right, up and it would go down and so on as if it followed your mouse but inverted.

I have a set of links (movie clips) arranged in a circle. When one of the links is clicked, I would like the circle of links to rotate until the selected link is in a certain position - straight down (90 degrees) in this case - and the others to maintain their positions relative to the clicked link (ie: they all move, but the distance between them is maintained). The behavior is intended to be like a bullet rotating into a chamber on a revolver, or - more accurately - like that of a Ferris Wheel. [URL] Here is my mangled version of the AS from the site linked above:
ActionScript Code:
// setting variables
var centerX = Stage.width/2; // Stage Center X
var centerY = Stage.height/2; // Stage Center Y
[code]....

I'm making a custom slider component. The head (the thing that you drag) is programmed like this:
head.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, function():void {
head.startDrag(false, new Rectangle(stubDiv,0,width - stubDiv - ((levels-maxLevel)*stubDiv),0));

how to position graphics in a circular pattern and they space out evenly depending on how many graphics are in a given array.So now, I want to be able to rotate the graphics in a clockwise or counter-clockwise pattern (not a sprite container that holds all of the graphics, but the graphics themselves.)
Code:
private function weaponChange(e:KeyboardEvent):void {
if(e.keyCode == LEFT_KEY1 || e.keyCode == LEFT_KEY2 || e.keyCode == DOWN_KEY1 || e.keyCode == DOWN_KEY2) {
for(var i:uint = 0; i < _weaponSymbols.length; i++) {[code]....
So this gets each graphic to the next location just fine. Now notice what I have in red... I want the graphics to animate along the parameter of the circle. All I need to do that is to identify the x,y coordinates between the two graphics. I can just subtract the y of one graphic from another... the x is something I have no idea how to do...

Well, basically what I want to do is, if the mouse is on the left side of the movie clip.. the movie clip will then play ( "A" animation inside the movie clip) vice cersa, if the mouse cursor is on the right side of the movie clip, the movie clip will then play ("B" animation inside the movie clip)
To put it simply, I would like to make a character in a game which faces the mouse cursor and chasing (with a runnning animation) after the mouse cursor but not rotating. I've got the movie clip slides along with the mouse working well, now I just need the mc to face the mouse cursor.

xcenter = 0;

The above code will change the position of the movieClip at every 22.5 degrees (thereby making sixteen distinct stops) and will trace a circle of radius 100 px. concept behind the math equations?

What I want to do is have a left arrow MC on the left side of the stage and right arrow MC on the right side of stage. When the mouse is over the left 1/3 of the stage, the left arrow appears, on the right 1/3 of the stage, the right arrow appears, but the middle 1/3 the arrows fade out.
I do NOT want to make large invisible MCs and detect the mouse movement that way. I just want it to be relative to the mouse position on the stage. I thought it would be very easy, but the eventListener fires everytime the mouse moves, so the left and right arrow MC animation is constantly being triggered, and they look like they are "shaking" for a lack of a better word.

I created a simple button that displays an error messeage: "error opening 'url" when I test the movie, but does play and opens in browser after publishing. However, it won't open in the browser in a different location. I pasted the html code in a web page but it doesn't work there nor opens in the browser in a differnet location from where it was originally published and saved. Why is that?

The title pretty much sums up what I am trying to do: I haven't started digging into using script in Flash yet, still being very much a beginner.
I created a simple file using movie clips nested in buttons so that when I mouseover a letter, it bobs up and down, but I can't work out how to make it return to its original "up" state *smoothly* when the mouse is moved away. If it must involve script please be aware I am a total noob!
