I'm building text balloons to display variable length messages in Flash. My question is pretty simple, though the answer may not be.The string I want to display.The font information.The width/height ratio I want the text field to have.How do I calculate the width and height of the text field it needs to display the text I give it, nothing more, nothing less?
View 2 RepliesI am a newbie in Flash CS3. How to resize the width of of a movie clip according to the size the size of dynamic text inside it. I did it by creating a text field 'myText' and then converted it to a MovieClip symbol and named the MovieClip as myClip. The text in myText is assigned at run-time and its width changes according to the text.
I did it as follows:-
myClip.myText.selectable = false;
myClip.mouseChildren = false;
myClip.useHandCursor = true;
myClip.buttonMode = true;
myClip.myText.width = myClip.myText.textWidth + 5;
On doing this I find the clickable area changes according to the size of the text field but the text field doesn't appear at all.
So I've got one more problem because the font size limit on 127px I need to scale my dynamic text so it can be bigger. So here the code I tought could work:

I figured out how to get a TextField to maintain focus when the tab key is pressed (using an event listener on FocusEvent.KEY_FOCUS_CHANGE), but what I'd like to do is control the size of the tab character in the TextField so that it is equal to five spaces. (I would just insert five spaces when the tab key is pressed, however due to requirements this is not an option.) Is this possible?

I display the name of operator in a TextField after parsing the xml file my problem is to loop through this different TextField with a fade effect.
What I have is a dynamicly created row of movieClips. In which TextFields are added with text that's received from an Array. What I would like to be able to do is click on the movieClip that's visible and have the code understand I clicked array[3] for example and it will show the 4th array item in another textfield.

I have a dynamic textfield on my stage with the instance name trackText.
I have declared public var trackText:TextField;.
When I trace trackText.text it gives me exactly what I expect but the actual text on the stage does not update.

making an XML menu for a website. Each button has a background and and over-state background. The backgrounds are 9 sliced scaled movie clips, well the over-state background is set up to mask an animation movie clip that is larger than any button will be. The mask is 9 slice scaled and is always the same size as the regular background. These backgrounds are x-scaled in a function in the Button.as. The title passed in through the XML determines the width. All of this so far works perfectly.
Now a navigation movie clip processes and adds all of the button movie clips based on the amount of nodes in the XML, this also sets the X and Y coordinates as well as sets a "spacer" between the buttons. Here is my problem, every time the function runs to create a new button, it sets the x value at:

This is great if I don't use the mask though. What happens since the movie clip I am masking in the over-state background is wider than the buttons are is that there is wayyy to large of a gap. When each button is added, actionscript sees the width of the button with everything in it, masked or not. So I've tried a for-loop in the button creating function to increment a number variable from 0 - the max number of buttons in the XML. I then want to set the x value to:

button.x = (button.background.width * i);
This is the background of the button that has the correct width that actionscript should be using. By multiplying it by the i variable, it should move the x right with every button. Unfortunately it's not working.

-input1 is for quantity
-input2 is for page count
When a user enters a number into the page count it makes a calculation and places the outcome into the dynamic textfield. This textfield is for the individual price.All of this so far works. What I want to do now is create another dynamic textfield for the total. So the individual price is multiplied by the quantity and this result is put in the new dynamic text field. I have the code for that working but here is where it gets tricky (for me anyway).The total price is to start off invisible. When I roll over the individual price the total price is to appear (For a test lets just say when I roll over an area the total price appears).To stop cursor flickering this should be done inside a movieclip. So... I have create a movieclip and placed a dynamic textfield inside it. They all have instance names BUT how do I reference it in script?I need to tell the resulting calculation to be placed inside the textfield which is inside the movieclip. If it isn't inside a movie clip I can do it. But how to I reference it when inside one?
I'm trying to make a text effect where on every frame the textfield increases in size and decreases in opacity. I'm using the scaleX and scaleY properties of my dynamic textfield to enlarge, but it's doing so keeping the left registration point fixed. I want to make it scale up radially outward, or with the center point fixed.

I want to set the text field on the fly for txtName, so I add a little ActionScript (3!) that does it nice and easily: txtName.text = "Foo";reat. Now why isn't it working when I try the same thing from a parent MovieClip which contains the MovieClip that has the dynamic text? Example:Child MovieClip with TextField ActionScript 3 in Frame #1:

I have this weird thing happening with flash and a dynamic textfield. Basically, someone rolls over a marker on a map, and a tooltip pops up with a dynamic textfield. The textfield is set to multiline=true and wordwrap = true, and I defined a specific width of 160 pixels.
The problem is, some of my text is jumping to the next line, some of it is just getting cut off. So if I have a line like "The Cat Jumped Over the Box", On one line I will see "The Cat Jumped" and on the next line I would see "the Box". It looks like it is masking out the "over" line and not pushing it to the next line.
It's not doing this for everything, just some longer lines. This is a really weird bug and I have tried for 8 hours to get this fixed. Has anyone ran into this problem before?
HTMLText is displaying really strangely. I'm displaying a textField with htmlText provided through XML, and in this bulleted list it'll display the first line all on one line, keep going off the end of the textareas size (ie. not do multiline) until the last word of the bullet, then put that word at the start of the next line. And it'll put the last word on the next line no matter how long your bullet item is.
eg.
myField.htmlText = "<li>Seek the input of experts</li>;
Would output
'seek the input of
experts'
I've checked and this thread was similar however I've removed all my tweens to test and it hasn't had any effect.
what to do about this? I've tried these to no avail:
myField.htmlText = myString;
myField.autoSize = TextFieldAutoSize.LEFT;
myField.wordWrap = true;
i have a movieclip containing a dynamic text-field in it. When movieclip is stretched using transform manager, the text stretches. i am developing a component. Moreover,Event.Resize can not be used as Event.Resize is the Stage event. it does not work for movie-clips and sprite.Putting it in Event. Enter Frame works but that hangs the whole CMS when this technique is used.

View 5 RepliesI have developed a rolling credits style movieclip in Flash using Actionscript 2. Text is loaded from an XML file and parsed into a dynamic textfield. This text includes hyperlinks to webpages defined by a url node in the xml so Flash can add the appropriate a href to the dynamic text field and make the link clickable.
In my first attempts to do this the textfield stayed still and all the links worked fine both testing locally and when I run it in a browser on my website.Then I wanted to make things move ... which I achieved easily enough and tested locally (from within Flash Professional) and the links remained clickable, a browser window opened and the webpage i was expecting to see opened... great
However, when I export the swf, upload it and run it from my website suddenly the links are not working. So I tried to test the movie in a browser from Flash Pro - same problem, it must be something to do with Flash Player and the moving dynamic textfield.
a couple of observations - the cursor will change to a hand icon when over the links as you would expect, and if I right click on the link and click open in a new window the link works ok, just not when I left click. If I stop the scrolling then the links become clickable again, it is only when the textfield is moving... actually its not technically scrolling, im moving the whole textfield.
I was wonder if anyone knew a way to get a textfields current size?

View 1 Repliestrying to build a Textfield dynamically in AS2/F8. I can't seem to get the text size to be larger than 127, and I am wondering if there is an upper limit when building them in AS. I have a class that has the following static method, which works well (for any size less than 127 apparently) If I pass in 200 as my nSize arg, when I trace(t.getTextFormat(0,1).size) i get 127 every time.
