View 3 RepliesI'm writing a small application for myself and instead of using a database I'd like to just use Excel to store the small amount of data I have on my local file system. I want to be able to load that data without having to use the typical FileReference browse() method as it would just be annoying to do every time I use the application.
The code below seems to find the file fine as the file.exists method below and most of the other attributes seem to be correct but the file.data is always null.I'm guessing this is a security issue and that's why I'm running into this problem but I thought I'd ask and see if there is in fact a way around this problem.

I have a flash movie, that shows a message to a user when it first loads up. When the users mouse enters the stage or moves the mouse the message disappears. However I would like to hide the message if the users mouse starts over the flash movie on the page load. Is this possible or does it need an interaction first?

View 15 RepliesI am building a flash application using flex. From time to time, I see an issue in IE 7 and 8 where the user logs into the site and the browser content pane is completely grey and the entire page (html, javascript and flash) won't load until the user clicks the X (Stop) button next the address bar. As soon as the X is clicked, the html loads and then the swf file loads immediately.
This doesn't happen for me or any other developers on the project so it is very hard to diagnose. The users are all using the latest flash player. The only difference between our setups that I can think of is that we have the debug version of flash player and they probably do not.
I've been fooling with this problem since AS2.0 (and shared Objects) and I'm not much closer to solving it, partly because every article I read on it is focused on php and server-side stuff that doesn't apply. How to load a String Array from a txt file in local user space (the folder from which the .swf is run). What I need to know: The easiest way for the user to save/load a file. The file has to contain Objects and Arrays reflecting his current status in the game. The goal is to avoid non-Flash apps and languages, and external Classes if possible (I do everything right in the main fla). The video player is "SCORM" compliant so that when the user clicks the "exit" button a class file is called to mark the user complete in an LMS.I have tested the SCORM Code previously and it works with out issue. Usually I have the completion code embedded in an Actions Layer of the movie. This is the first time I have attempted to call the completion status in a class file, I have added a "trace statement" when the movie is tested within flash it runs the trace statement properly, but when uploaded to the LMS environment the course does not complete properly

How can save data into a XML file without user prompt dialog in Action Script 3?
I'm writing an simple application (with adobe flash) that runs on client PC and save user state data in XML file in same directory of app. When i use FileReference it shows a user dialog for saving file. Is there any class to save just XML data directly into XML file?
I think writing just XML (text plane) data couldn't make any security problems?

step2- the content goes into a datagrid that is displayed (works fine)
step3- In AS3 I dynamically add some lines to this xml file(works fine)
step4- I save it locally (works fine)
step5-and want the datagrid to be updated..(works not-so-well)
So, in step 4, the data is saved into the xml file, but in order to finish the save, the user has to click on the "Save as" windows in order to have the file updated of course.. and that's where's my problem, how can i tell flash to wait till the user actually saves the file, before reload the xml file in the datagrid ? here's the code :

I'm trying to load an xml file from via http into my flash 8 file. Locally it works fine but when on the server it fails. I assume this has to do the flash security sandbox. How do I get around this. I own the servers so is there some sort of fix that I upload to allow the swf to receive the data?
View 1 RepliesI am trying to load a txt file into flash by putting the url in an xml file. The XML file is structured like this:

Now I load it into arrays in flash: image[0] and description[0]. The images is displayed the way I want to, the thing is I want to pass on the url that is in description[0] to a loadMovie or something like that. If i say desc_txt.text = description[0]; it will just show AW0001.txt in flash. I've also tried this with load and loadVars but I can't figure it out.
Here is the basic structure of my xml code:

Is there a way for flash to detect a user's bandwidth, and depending the size of bandwidth, stop loading, or continue with the load? Now that I'm thinking about it, this would probably be a javascript detection script and if the bandwidth is high, load .swf, if not load a .jpg?

In other words I wonder wether it is possible to offer a webcam service on a website, so that the streaming video goes directly from user to user, without overloading the system.
We have a sort of game, generated with Flash in AS3, on our website where the reader is invited to eliminate the California Budget Deficit. It's connected to a database where we keep track of the responses and print them in chart form and post the results on the website so everyone can see the most popular budget items the readers want to cut.

We've had many, many requests to have an option where the reader can get a copy of his/her choices that he/she can print out. I've thought about having a movieclip pop up that shows those choices (and that would be simple enough), but in addition to that, what I'd really like to do is have a way to download those choices to the reader's computer as a text file or maybe have a "Print" button on the movieclip showing the choices that would print just that movieclip. The database we have wouldn't really be suitable because it's set up to simply show which were chosen and which not, and the names of the submissions and choices are variables that don't really mean anything except to us when we put it all in an excel file.
