Flex :: Getting Measured Width Of A Button Label?
Aug 18, 2009Is there a way to get the measured-width of a button label in flex based on its style properties at runtime?

View 2 RepliesOnce I've set either the width or percentWidth property on a flex label, is there a way to reset the width to its default (i.e., the width of the text plus padding)? I'm using the label as a renderer. In some cases, I'd like it to automatically size to the text, and in other cases, I'd like it to be a percentage width of its container. Obviously, I could use two separate labels, one for each of the above cases, but I'm curious if it's possible to reset the label to its default behavior.
View 2 RepliesI need to set the text of a spark label and then position such label along the x axis depending on its width. Unfortunately, it seems that the width of the label does not update right away and thus the positioning will fail. I can listen to updateComplete events on the label and update its position then, but that means repositioning the label a lot more often than I would like (updateComplete fires off a lot more often than upon changing width). how to properly handle what would appear to be a trivial task?
Here's a code snippet that shows what I described above. If you press the button you will see 3 traces: the label width before changing its text, right after setting its text, and when the label is done updating itself. Would love to know if there's a way to get the correct width without having to listen to updateComplete events... The button and the VGroups are just there to run the example

Suppose I have a (Spark) label. What is the best way to find the length of the text in it? I looked at the myLable.measureText("bla bla") method but it says: To measure text in Spark components, get the measurements of a spark.components.Label or spark.components.RichTextfter looking around I cannot find what this is refering to. I tried myLabel.measureWidth() but this does not return anything usefull (it frequently returns zero). Note: I am explicitly setting the width like this:<s:Lable width="{globalWidthVariable"} .../>If the text overflows I would like to increse the globalWidthVariable to the size of the text.
View 1 RepliesI am creating a nav in flex that pulls in buttons dynamically from xml. THe problem i am having is setting the button width to the text width. currently the buttons are all the same width and if the text is larger then it just cuts off. I've tried a few ways of doing this:Setting button width to 100%On creation of the button try to set the width of the button to the text programmatically. Something like evt.target.width = evt.target.textWidth;
View 1 RepliesI trying here to avoid having to bind resources to all my components labels ( ie a button) and find a way to have this automated.
Problem: It corrupts the layout in design mode to bind directly in the mxml label="{resourceManager.getString('myResources', 'submit')}" and makes the design view useless. but when declaring bindings elsewhere, in actionScript or via a bind tag, it is counter productive and prone to many errors and miss.
Proposition: I would like to create my own button that automatically invoke resources to localize a button label. So the author puts "Submit" in the mxml description of my button, and when running it would take the value of the label ie "submit" and use resourceManager.getString('myResources', 'submit').
but I can't find the way to override the set label function, Is it possible if yes how? else how can I go about it?
Maybe I am missing an essential process here that would make the use of resources more elegant, as well as how to override such thing as a button's label.
The standard Flex button does not allow the Label Text to word wrap. I read in the internet that there are some undocumented ways to handle this but I did not get them to work.
View 2 RepliesI create a custom component to override the linkButton to make it behave that if an exist value is found, it would shown as "Added".
By default the button label is "Add to cart", I could not make the button become "Added" after trying many trial and error on uHandler which I suppose, COMPLETE, ENTER_FRAME, CREATION_COMPLETE could not even update the label.
public class Btn extends LinkButton{
public function Btn(){

Is there a way, for a Button's "label" field, to display text over several lines? Or else to automatically "wrap" the text in several lines instead of cutting part of it?
View 4 RepliesI need to show few words in bold for radio buttons in Flex 3. something like the following:
option 1: Hello world. option 2: Hello world.
I see that there is no htmlText property for label of Radio Button. Anyone has any suggestions in accomplishing this requirement?
It is possible to bold some part of label in standard Button? example:ICON - normal_normal_text BOLD_BOLD_text.
View 2 RepliesI want to build a flex FormItem extension that adds a button into the item label section, such that there is both a text label and, to the right of it, a button that uses an image icon: Basically, I want to create that 'i' icon, such that I can click on it to display a help overlay for the item in question.Is there an existing component that does this? If not, how do I do it?
View 1 RepliesI have a button in my application and I want it to respond a bit in a special way. Initially the label color of the button is White, I want the color of the text to change to 50% white on the Over State and to 25% on the Down state. Is this possible?
I tried an alternative way using css which does not do the percentage stuff but only changes the color (see css code below), but this does not seem to work. I more specifically want the color to change in terms of percentage like I mentioned above.
Note that I am using the Skin file only to loads images for each state on the button.

downSkin: Embed(source="text.swf", symbol="btn_focus");
overSkin: Embed(source="text.swf", symbol="btn_hover");

I have the following codes,

var myOptionButton1:spark.components.RadioButton = new spark.components.RadioButton();
myOptionButton1.label = answerArray.getItemAt(i).Answer_Choice;

I have created a linkbar with two labels. Now, I need to keep a track of the label clicks.i.e. If in the beginning "First" is clicked, the details will be displayed. After that, if without submitting the details, "Second" is clicked then an alert message should come to inform the user that "First is still in progress, do you want to cancel and begin Second operation". Vice-versa for Second to First transition. I need to know how to write events to keep track of which button clicked.
View 1 RepliesI have a button with variable-length of label text. I have a User Setting that can turn on or off the label text on this button.
How can I implement this?
NOTE: the button's background has a gradient color.
I tried using BlendMode.LAYER, no luck;
I tried using Button.resizeHandler
private function resizeHandler(event:ResizeEvent):void
{
if (event.oldWidth > this.width)

but it only worked if the initial UserSetting value is true.
How about embedded font? I don't know how to apply it to button
I have created one button component using one Bitmap and one Label in it. Thing is that when user Clicks on on the button I want to changes button's Icon/Image and Label Text. I want to do this using FlashCS5 and ActionScript-3. I have tried following but it gives me runtime Error

I have 4 buttons, all of them have the same width.
<s:Button id="btn1" width="{btnWidth}" />
<s:Button id="btn2" width="{btnWidth}" />
<s:Button id="btn3" width="{btnWidth}" />
<s:Button id="btn4" width="{btnWidth}" />
Is it possible to set their width with Style, something like this: I tried it, but auto-complete isn't working, which leads me to think that there's something wrong with the syntax. Basically my goal is to not have the width property set specifically for all 4.
How do I set the individual button sizes in a Spark ButtonBar? It used to be something like[code]...
View 2 RepliesI output a motion to an XML file using the Export Motion XML command. Then I applied it to a new graphic, and it came out wrong. After 323 frames of motion, the graphic is now at the wrong position, about 15 pixels to the left of where it should be.
When creating the animation, I had "snap to pixels" turned on, so every position of the source graphic is at a round number. When I look at the values in the generated XML file, it's full of sequences like this:

I have created a spark ButtonBar which is dynamically populated with XML and skinned to look like a standard TabBar. When I used the TabBar in Flex 3, the width of each Tab would shrink or grow to the size of the Label, plus a little padding either side. When using the spark ButtonBar in Flex 4, I find that no matter how short the label (even an empty string), the Buttons will be at least 70 pixels wide, and will expand for longer labels. I have tried setting the minWidth to 20 in various places, including on my ButtonBarButton skin, but this has no effect.
View 1 RepliesIn a flex project that I have that is designed to scale 100% to the web window, I have a spark list. And I have a simple itemrenderer that takes the data and displays a name, and a message. Just think of it like a simple instant messenger display. The problem is that for my msg_txt label I want to give it a width thats the width of the parent list thats holding it.I tried turning the horizontalScrollPolicy to off, also tried width="this.parent.parent.width}" (as well as this.parent.width) for the spark label inside the item renderer. and in the label i tried some things like left="0" right="0" maxWidth="{this.width}" but nothing really does the trick.How can I make this label have a max width of the list thats holding it, AND make sure it resizes if the size of the browser changes and the list size changes?heres the list:
<s:List id="chat_content" width="100%" height="100%"
alternatingItemColors="[#EEEEEE,#E6E6E6]" contentBackgroundColor="#EEEEEE"
horizontalScrollPolicy="off" itemRenderer="renderers.ActiveChatItemRenderer">

I'm having issues with implementing a flex button componentI have applied a CSS style to button and set border-color to, say #555555.So far, it works as expected.Then, when my application is resized, the border of the button component becomes blurred and its width automatically changes from 1 pixel to 2 pixels, which doesn't look very well.hen I maximize the app again, after the border is blurred, the buttons' border becomes 1 pixel and looks nice.

I'm just getting started switching from flash to flex for the better components. I am trying the simple experiment of adding a button and then changing the label. This code does not work. It does not recognize myButton. In flash I could access a button instance after adding it using the instance name. Can't you do this in flex?
<s:Button x="50" y="42" label="Button" id="myButton"/>

Anyway what I need to do is have a movie clip finish playing when a button is clicked and then go to the frame label associated with the button. I hope I'm explaining myself ok. So if I had say 4 buttons Home Gallery About Contact If Contact is clicked then I want the Home page to play (Which is a fade out) and then go to Contact Page (which will fade in). Then If Gallery is clicked then I want Contact to fade out and then go to Gallery page and fade in.
