Use A Variable Within An AttachMovie Statement?
Sep 11, 2009
What I'm trying to do is simply this:
<variable> = mvcShip
var ship1 = _root.attachMovie( <variable>, shipName + _root.getNextHighestDepth(), _root.getNextHighestDepth() );
What i am trying to attempt here is to make the variable equal to the name of an item in my library. (Im using this to use different ships in an old arcade-style vertical shooter). This is meant to make a ship appear on stage.
When <variable> is replaced with a library item (eg. mvcShip), it works fine, but if the variable is in place, i get a trace value of ship1 as "undefined", and the ship doesnt show up on the stage.

I want to declare a variable on the main timeline that can be called from anywhere in my movie. So, _global var should be the right approach. I want to declare a movie clip 'MC1' "open", or "closed" so that when it is revisited, my flash file knows the user has been there before and performs a different task from the one it does when 'MC1' was first encountered. So, i need a 'if' statement to run from the variable, when the playhead encounters the movieClip.

var arr:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection;
for (var i:int = 0; i<data.length; i++){

I am trying to access a text object inside an MC inside a variable (with a corresponding Symbol name) after dynamically attaching an MC. the code that sets the "dockTemplate" variable is below. I'm trying to write to the "item" property called "label" on a rollover function called "dockRolls".
var dockTemplate = {
layout: 0
icon_size: 80,
icon_min: 50,
[Code].....
externally, there is another AS file that extends the MovieClip class which is setting up the functions, etc. in 'var dockTemplate'. that seems to be working fine. my question is:
HOW do I write to/access the text object 'orderEntry_txt' inside 'dockTemplate'?

All I need to know is how to set the idName to attach in attachMovie to the value of a variable?The linkages are fine, the problem is just being able to specify a different clip to load depending on what a certain variable is set to.I don't have the FLA with me right now..OK, say I have a variable with the string, '00'. When this code runs, I want it to load the clip with the linkage, '00'. Say the variable's string changes to '-10'. Then when the code runs, it should load the clip with the linkage '-10'.If this isn't possible, or there is a better way...I'm working on a game. I want it to attach a different level to the stage depending on what value a 2 variables are, but I keep getting Type Mismatch, or it doesn't work.[code]The current linkages are 00 (0x, 0y), and -10 (-1x, 0y). They are comprised of 2 variables, the first one is xmap, and the second is ymap. I want to be able to combine the 2 variables and then attach the clip with that linkage to the stage..

I am creating movie clips with a for loop using attachMovie, I would like to pass a variable into the clip itself at the time of it's creation. It seems simple enough, but my little brain is imploding...
So basically I got an MC: "clip"+i, which I would like to pass a variable (from an array), for it to use on it's own timeline. I want the next clip to be able to use the next variable in the array in it's own timeline.

I have a script which places a clip on the stage (well, just off it), and rotates the clip and then tweens it to a certain x/y coordinate based on the rotation using TweenLite, and all of this on a setInterval of 2 milliseconds. That works well. Thing is, I don't seem to be able to set a unique name based on the clipname and an incrementing number. Basically (and this isn't the whole thing, this is just the general idea), it goes:
Code:
interval = setinterval("dothis", 2);
var increment=0;
function dothis(){
attachMovie(movieICall, "movieICall" + increment; 1)
movieICall._x = ;
_y= etc;
increment++;
}
So when I set the interval to 2 seconds, it moves everything well and there are no problems. When I set the interval to 2 milliseconds, the clips only get just onto the screen before disappearing. I've tried creating a function to handle the x,y, tween. So I could refer to the clip with a "this", but it doesn't change anything. The only thing I can think of is that movieICall is not incrementing, and every clip on the screen is being referred to as movieICall, in which case the next case of x, y, tweening overwrites that last one and effectively kills the last one (but then why is it not just left sitting on the screen)? I tried adding an overwrite: false to the end of the TweenLite, but that only let the tween happen once and then...nothing.

This shouldn't be too difficult. Heres my code:
for(i=0; i<30; i++){
var box[i]:Object = new Object()
box[i].id = [i]
box[i].name = "default"
box[i].location = "default"
box[i].type = "default"
But its not working. I keep getting error messages concerning the var box[i] statement.

Code:
var featureLimit:String = "featureType == "logo_ci4" || featureType == "logo_ss2" || featureType == "logo_db"";
//if statement contained in a for loop which gathers the featureType variables
if(featureLimit){

I have a for statement, using an incrementing variable "a." A dynamic amount of herbs are generated, so here is the for statement.
Code:
for(a=1; a<_global.herbAmount+1; a++) {
var herbMC = _root["herb"+a];
trace(herbMC);
}
When I trace "a," it traces 1, 2, 3 or however many numbers there are up to the global herbAmount number. When I trace _root["herb"], _level0.herb pops out. When I add "a" onto _root["herb"], undefined is traced....why?

I am trying to get a high score table set up and I have it all working except for an if statement which decides whether to put a zero in the time or not.
ActionScript Code:
variable declared at the top
var gap:String;
This is getting data that is stored - it works fine except for the underlined "gap" - The "gap" is meant to be calling the variable which has the below if statement
ScoreInputScore.text=String(SpotTheDifferenceGame._minute)+gap+String(SpotTheDifferenceGame._second);
if (SpotTheDifferenceGame._second<10) {
gap=(":0");
} else {
gap=(":");
}
I thought by have the variable called in in the function and having the if statement with gap= it would do the specified text in the dynamic text box. When I put a trace on "gap" it traces with the correct text depending on what the number is but in my dynamic text box it displays as number null number.
// displays like this when trace put on it
:0
// displays like this in dynamic text box

Having a few problems with what I thought was a simple if statement. Here is the code:

I can't quite figure out the small problem with the code. It seems to just bypass the first requirement of the if statement when I do type in the proper input and go straight to the else statement.

if (variable == 1){
//code
//Execute this code.
} else if (variable == 2) {
//code
[Code]...
I dont want to copy the code from the first into the second and the first and second into the third.
My mind isn't working and there is probably an extremelly simple way to get this working.
I know I could used functions but for some reason it stops the instance referencing working: _root["bullet"+j] doesnt work in a function.

The Flash movie contains 2 Text files, one Component button, and 1 component checkbox.The purpose of the application is to load an XML file(works)Populate 2 text fields with information from the XML file(works)Compare the two text fields, if they contain the same information then the checkbox, via AS is told to be selected. (Heres the problem);
Heres the code:
Code:
runCode_btn.onPress = function() {
data_xml = new XML();
data_xml.ignoreWhite = true;
data_xml.onLoad = function(success) {
[code]....
The idea behind this app is that its an electronic form. The user fills it out, the information is then sent to a newly created XML file, months later the open the XML file in flash, and Flash fills out text fields and check and or unchecks Checkboxes based on the XML data.CheckBoxes are mandatory.But I don't see how I'll be able to use them if i can't create and condition statements based on the loaded Data.

what I'm trying to do is create an else if argument for each object in an array based on a user set number
Code:
for(var i:int=0; i < numberOfElseIfs; i++){
GENERATE AS3 CODE
}
to which I want it to GENERATE THE FOLLOWING CODE:
Code:
}else if(baskets[i].used == false){
baskets[i].used = true;
drawButton(i);
}
the problem is obviously that the compiler reads this code rather than understanding I'm trying to regenerate the code within the for loop...does that make sense :S? So basically I need as3 to read the code between the for statement as if it is going to echo that out later. Is this even possible?
