ActionScript 2.0 :: Designing Game Level - How To Gain Scroll Access

Aug 13, 2010

I tried all zooms, placing objects outside there to gain scroll access, but it won't, and seem to be outside of some lighter gray plate... is it simply the limit? how the hell can I design the rest of my level?

Pointers For Designing Simple Interactive Game?

May 13, 2009

I'm looking to build a very simple (hopefully!) interactive game.

- A number of balls are situated at the bottom of the stage.

- There are several dropzones which the balls can be placed in.

-Once a dropzone is occupied with a ball, its not possible to populate that the dropzone with another ball until the present one has been removed. -Depending on which balls are present in the dropzones, the balls animate differently. the red ball is placed in a dropzone.  There are currently no other dropzones populated with a ball.

Javascript :: Gain Access To An Embedded Flash Video's Parameters That Is Embedded On A Site You Don't Own Via A Browser Extension?

Jan 2, 2011

I'd like to gain read only access to the following parameters of embedded Flash videos located on sites that I do not own through my own custom browser extension/add-on:

Time location of playback head (so I can display the current time in the browser extension via HTML5/JavaScript) Frames (so I can make capture them to an image file, save it and display image in browser extension) Original Dimensions in pixels (so I can display the original video dimensions via JS/HTML5 in browser extension)

Is this possible by using Javascript and HTML5 from a browser extension?

Would I have to use something like the SWFObject Javascript API [URL]

Designing Flash Site Viewed Over Cell Phone With Web Access?

May 24, 2009

The question I have today is concerning a design of a Flash Website. Is there any certain way you will need to design a flash site so it can be viewd over cell phone with web access. The reason I'm asking is that I have a friend that say he can view some flash site and some he can't. So I'm thinking tat must have something to do with the way the site is designed.

Actionscript 3 :: Skipping To Next Game Level?

Feb 10, 2011

I am in the process of building a game with around 20 levels. Now, as I was thinking of trying to add a "skip" option to the game with the space bar key. I have a little trouble, since holding down the spacebar invokes the KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN event multiple times.

The above scenario (Keydown and keyup) works just fine when I'm trying to move my player character on screen. The one main concern that is lingering in my mind is "Is this going wrong because the KeyboardEvent listeners do get removed and added when changing levels?"

P.S: Adding the skip option as a button works just fine, but I'd really like to use Spacebar for the ease of use.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Load One Game Level At A Time?

Jan 12, 2012

I have seen in some games where instead of loading the whole game at the beginning of the game, they load one level, with the preloader on the screen, then when that level is over, another level is loaded, with the preloader on the screen, etc. I've been trying to find a tutorial or some information on how to do this online but couldn't find anything. I have a game that takes a long time to load when loading it all at the beginning of the game, so I'd like to load it level by level.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Game Level Layout Method?

Feb 18, 2011

I am trying to understand the best technique for this.My game is like a side scroller. A new "Tile" or piece of game would contain one of each display objects.

-terrain

-slide (like a playground slide)

-other stuff...

pseudo example: the first tile set would be pieces terrain1 and slide3

Code:
var terrainPieces:Array = new Array(1,2,6,3,16,2,3,5,7,2);
var slidePieces:Array = new Array (3,0,1,2,00,4,2,1,4,0);

One of my issues is readability and ease of level layout.i want to keep the code stacked in a way i can read pieces easily, which is why slidePiece 0 or 00 == no slide (just to keep the array in line).I can look at this and say to myself the 6th set would look like terrain2,slide4. (which are both pooled display objects) Would it be better if each "tile" is a class containing references to each asset? If so, i cant see how to assign each tile in a readable form while setting up the level layout on my end.

Code:

ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash Game - Can't Add Level Movie Clip To The Stage

I'm creating a game, here is a screenshot: I'm trying to implement a scene system in an easy way (I'm a beginner). In this tutorial the author adds scenes as movie clip. So I tried making a movie clip with action script export name the same as my main .as file. When I add it to the scene manually, dragging and dropping from the library, it works. But when I try adding it from a new starting .as file, I get a #1009 error. Adding a test movie clip with the same code works.

As each level starts, I would like a movieclip to play and then disappear after a second or so. The movieclip will just say "level 1", "level 2" etc, without any interaction. Ideally it will appear as the level loads, and then fade out to disappear.

This is my first attempt at a game in AS3.I'm currently experiencing a problem which I'm sure is a result of my poor understanding of programming concepts. My problem is this, every time I call the function to rebuild my level, the game progressively slows down.I've tried to clear everything, but somehow something is still causing the slow down. I'll attach a zip with all of the files, and also I will add the main code to this. The attempted clearing happens in a function called cleanup() and the level setting up in setupLevel().[code]

I notice that variable declare within a function will not be accessible outside the function or from another event handler or from another function....

I have seen code that make it possible my declaring a new variable?

Actionscript 3 :: Memory Gain Changing Alpha Value Of An Object?

Dec 30, 2011

for a periodic table tool I'm making, I've incorporated an effect that changes the alpha value whenever I hover over an element (pretty standard). I've noticed a mysterious gain in memory when hovering over my elements; using SYSTEM.TOTAL_MEMORY - there would be about 0.005MB increase in memory usage when I hover over an element, which isn't relinquished when I move my mouse off. However, if I move my mouse back on again, there isn't a second memory gain.

[Code]...

Does anyone know why this memory gain is happening when the alpha value is changed? And curiously why it only happens once? Some extra info: my Element class is a MovieClip, with a couple of TextFields, primitive variables and a MovieClip in it. It has had its mouseChildren property set to false (and buttonMode property set to true).

Flash :: Access MainTimeline Symbol Using Class-level Embed?

Jan 18, 2012

Here's the scenario: We have a creative team that operates in Flash CS5.5 and produces SWF assets which have both graphics elements and actionscript code in them, and an engineering team which authors .as files and builds "code SWFs". The code SWF files must load or embed the creative assets and interact with the code therein for our apps to function.

For iOS mobile development, there is another consideration - it is not possible to load runtime code in an AIR app packages for iOS because of Apple TOS (see related question). Hence, it is not possible to use a Loader to load SWFs in an iOS environment and retain their code.

Embedding a SWF into an ActionScript file the standard way results in a Loader that loads the embedded SWF directly as bytes. This results in access to the top-level, main timeline as follows:

Actionscript 3 :: Adding An Intro To A Swf Without Access To The Fla Differences Between Top-level And Loaded Swfs

Feb 3, 2010

I've got to (quickly!) add an intro to an existing flash masthead on a site that I've inherited. I don't have access to the source .fla's, so I approached the problem by putting the intro in a wrapper swf and loading the current masthead and adding it to the display list on Event.INIT. So far, so good. (Incidentally, the swfs are built for flash player 9 and use AS3.)

The problem I'm having is that although the intro plays fine and loads / displays the beginning of the masthead swf, which is a loading animation, the masthead itself never actually plays. Essentially, my question is: what would cause an actionscript 3-based swf to behave differently when it's the child of another swf as opposed to at the top level of the embedded swf?

Potentially important details: Embedding is being handled with swfobject, and no flashvars are being passed in. There are two params, which are base: "/flash/" and wmode: "opaque". All the swfs and flash data live in /flash/. The flash elements (minus the intro I built) were constructed using the Inky flash framework, with which I'm not familiar.

UPDATE: I've reconsidered my approach to the problem and gotten it working by using ExternalInterface; I'm having the intro swf call a js function when it finishes playing, which swaps out the intro swf and replaces it with the current masthead (the approach is outlined here). I'd still like to know why I was witnessing the behavior I was seeing earlier, though, so any ideas and suggestions would be welcome.
