ActionScript 2.0 :: Getting Properties For Dyna Created Mc?
Oct 25, 2005
I am having trouble trying to retrieve properties for a container_mc that dynamically creates content upon loading. The container_mc is creating text boxes from an array and so its _height is dependant on the array.length.
So how do I do this without getting 0:
Code:
//after loading
trace(container_mc._width);

If I create a class and set up one property which is a variable initiated at the start of the class but not within a function or a constructor and I reference the property from the .fla in a for loop as:Book is the class and myBook is the new object.
myBook:Book = new Book(); // (fla script).
for(var prop in myBook) {
trace(prop);
}
[code]...
The trace does not return anything. However when I include myProp (the class variable) in a function (other than Book function) and call that function from the .fla then the trace works and I can see myProp. Do I need to include Class variables in called functions (methods of the Class) in order for them to be properties of the Class?

var circle:MovieClip = new MovieClip();

How can I access a property (say .alpha or any other property) of "circle6"??

I'm creating/adding elements in my item renderer but from some reason you cant access their specific properties, you can only change the general properties. I created a LABEL component but when i do LabelName.font , nothing happens, its like flex doesn't recognize that this is a LABEL. [code]...

I need to dynamically bind properties of components created at runtime. In this particular case please assume I need to use bindProperty. I don't quite understand why the following simplistic test is failing (see code). When I click the button, the label text does not change.
I realize that there are simpler ways to go about this particular example using traditional non-dynamic binding, but I need to understand it in terms of using bindProperty.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:WindowedApplication xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute" xmlns:ns1="Tools.*" minWidth="684" minHeight="484" xmlns:ns2="*" creationComplete="Init();">

I created a movie clip symbol with a user interface in it, using the standard components. It contains various components that I draged on the stage. I named the instances (e.g titleLabel). Then I created an ActionScript class for that user interface. Under the linkage properties of the symbol I specified that class. In the class itself, i declared the attribute "var titleLabel:Label". I thought this would be the same instance from the symbol? But: Trying to set the text of the Label AFTER the movie was dynamically added to the parent does not work. I cannot access any properties.
Here is the example:
My Class for the user interface:
Code:
import mx.controls.*;
class Information extends MovieClip {
var titleLabel:Label; //this is the same instance name as in the symbol
[Code].....

Just been playing around with the tutorials, on the Set properties/Get properties. Everything is all cool, except the "instance name" aspect. I dnt really understand that too well. Is it possible to change an Mc Name dynamically? If you look at my FLA when you hit the top left red button you will get a trace of the mcName as "square". Now if you input a new mc Name on the right hand side, you will see it change on the left hand side. But i want to know why it doesnt remain as the new mc Name, it still goes back to square.

I forgot to put it in the title so I'll just place it here; I am using AS 2.0. I know that there are other ways to accomplish the goal that am after, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to access the properties of an object's properties?
Here is the code that I thought of, even though it doesn't work
var a:Object = new Object();
a.bproperty = 0; //lowerlevel properties
a.cproperty = 1; // lowerlevel properties
[Code].....
This really just boils down to how I am organizing the code(I have ideas on what do next, and i am 99% sure that I can get them to work), and if there is a way to dynamically access the properties of the objects properties, It will save me from creating yet another large block of code for my project. If you want to see the unfinished project, go to [URL]

I have only one question but phrased it 3 ways:
1) Is it better to pre=render things say in photoshop or have flash render them?
2) if I have a field of stars that drift along; is it better to create that Star Field in photoshop as a single picture (say a .png) or to create a star in my library and add it to a movie clip and then have that drift along?
Lets say I have a blur effect on my stars and have an equivalent on the photoshop.
3) I have heard (and experienced) adding effects like blur takes a fair amount of CPU and memory so was wondering if I created the effect in photoshop and then imported the 'blurred' object into my flash if I could cut down on system resources?

When an instance variable is constructed by a constructor method, why do you need to refer to the current instance variable being created when its the only one being created? I understand assigning an expression to it but why name it "this." when it is the only object that the constructor is building? Does it have some hing to do with being able to naming that object in the Local Variable? In other words am I creating a generic object that will be named in another class?

i'm attempting to cast an object's property as an actual property of another object. here's my object variable: var propObj:Object = {prop:"width", width:50}; now i want to assign the property of a sprite using that object's properties. var sp:Sprite = new Sprite(); sp.(propObj.prop as Sprite.property) = propObj.width; now, i'm not even going to try that because i know the compiler will explode all up in my face. but you should be able to see what i'm trying to do. why i'm trying to do it is because i'm reading in an XML file with an undetermined list of usable properties for specific objects. so instead of writing something like a huge switch statement to evaluate whether the XML file has a value for that specific property, i'm trying to assign properties dynamically based on what's available in the XML file. if what i'm trying to do is possible, what's the best way to do it?

I'm dynamically creating movieclips with dynamically created movieclips inside them and am having trouble with targeting them.Below is a simplified example of what I'm trying to achieve, in the real file there are a lot more movieclips and I'm creating and naming them with a for loop.
This one is just one Sprite created inside another sprite. I can target the top level sprite named "testname". However when i try target the nested MC it throws an error.The bottom couple of traces are just test MCs I've made to make sure i got the syntax right, on targeting nested movieclips.
PHP Code:
var holder:Sprite = new test1();holder.name = "testname";this.addChild(holder);var holder2:Sprite = new test2();holder2.name = "testname2";holder.addChild(holder2);trace(getChildByName("testname").x); //this one traces finetrace(getChildByName("testname").getChildByName("testname2").x);//this throws up an errortrace(testclip1.x);trace(testclip1.testclip2.x);

I'm trying to craft a simple image gallery with 6 thumbnails on the left and a large image container on the right. I've assigned a MOUSE_OVER listener that executes the following function when activated:
Code:
function viewLargeImage(evt:MouseEvent):void {
var imageName:String = evt.target.name + "_large";
this.mc_tabRight.imageName.visible = true;
}
The instance names of the thumbnails are img1, img2, and so on, and their larger counterparts are img1_large, img2_large, and so on. When the MOUSE_OVER occurs, the larger version becomes visible. The gallery is within a movie clip (mc_tabRight; a tab that pulls out from the right side).So in my mind, the second line of the function should make visible the instance passed from the variable in the first line based on the rollover. I tested the code using trace("imageName"); and it returned the correct instance name, but when executed and the thumbnails rolled-over, it returns this error: TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties.
The larger images are all present on the stage when the function is called. I'm sure I'm making some fundamental error here,

I need to create animations to serve two audiences: 1) human participants in an experiment, and 2) a program I'm writing that will "watch" the same scenes. For the first audience, exporting to SWF works just fine, but for the second "audience", the Export Motion XML option isn't working as expected.
As a test, I created an ActionScript3 FLA file in Flash CS4 with a stationary red circle in one layer and a green circle in a second layer that moves across 10 frames. When I export each of these layers, the files differ only in the "x", "y", and "symbolName" attributes.
How can I generate a single text-formatted file that shows the positions of each symbol in each frame?
