ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash Using 'as' To Cast Content During INIT Event Callback Breaks Frame 0 Script Execution

Aug 12, 2011

I've got a really weird problem that I've boiled down to its fundamentals, and I'm hoping that someone here smarter than I am knows why AS3 would be acting this way. Attached is a ZIP with a few FLAs and .AS files. I'm using Flash CS5. Please bear with me as I explain the situation.

I have a class called TestChildA:
package testing
{
import flash.display.MovieClip;

[Code]...

For some reason, the fact that we're not trying to obtain a TestChildA reference allows the Frame 0 ActionScript in TestChildA.swf to execute properly. TestChildB, on the other hand, continues to fail Frame 0 execution since we're still getting a reference to it.

As we saw in the first version of the INIT handler above, querying the test_str variable out of the loaded content directly without trying to cast it worked fine. Why is it that using 'as' to get a specific reference to the content with the proper class results in the Frame 0 script of that content to fail running? Theoretically, the Frame 0 actions should have already been executed prior to reaching the INIT handler anyway, so it's doubly confusing.

If anyone has a better understanding than I of the ActionScript internals and can explain the reason for this issue,

ActionScript 3.0 :: Loader Event.INIT Fires But Loader.content Is Null?

May 9, 2009

The title describes the problem: Loader.load() is firing the INIT event, but in my listener it's reporting loader.content as null. The description for INIT event is "Dispatched by the associated LoaderInfo object when the properties and methods of the loaded SWF file are accessible."I'm loading a lot of JPG images, and 95 percent of the time it works fine; the init listener fires and reports valid loader. content.I absolutely need loader.content available because I need to set the bitmap smoothing property to true.I've tried using Event.COMPLETE and it has the exact same problematic behavior.

Actionscript 3 :: Use The Same Event-listener Callback For Multiple Event Types?

Nov 18, 2011

This might be more of a subjective question, but is it generally best practice to have one dedicated method per event-types that you add an event-listener?

Such as:

myButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, onMouseOver);
myButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OUT, onMouseOut);
//Somewhere else in the code...

[Code].....

And if you had a MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN and other relevant MouseEvents event-listeners to watch for, you could even set a switch statement to handle all the various MouseEvent types.

Android :: Flash Content Breaks WebView Boundings And Overlaps Native Layout Elements

Dec 11, 2010

I'm using a WebView to display a web page which contains some Flash content which basically works pretty well.
The big problem is, that the Flash content seems not to consider the WebView's boundings: The Flash content is displayed even if the WebView is too small to show the complete page and the Flash content is not inside the WebView's boundings. Moreover this Flash content overlays other (native) layout elements that are displayed next to the WebView.To me, it seems, that the Flash content is rendered in (special) z-Layer, that overlays all other layout elements.

Tested with: Android 2.2 and Flash 10.1.Is this a known bug in Adobes Flash player 10.1?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Event Listeners Disappearing - Movie To The Correct Frame That The Corresponding Content Is On?

Feb 23, 2010

I am using Adobe Flash Professional CS4 with all the latest updates. The FLA is an Actionscript 3.0 file. I am creating a basic flash site with several pages that change when the user clicks links on a left side navigation bar. on the pages are sub tabs that change out different content(text) based on what the user clicks on the current page. when they click a button it triggers an event listener, the event listener runs its function which changes the definition of an already defined (String) variable, and the page goes on to a frame checks what that variable is and then leads the movie to the correct frame that the corresponding content is on.

here's the issue: it works perfectly the first few times, and then the event listeners stop working, first one of them, then all three once i click one of the two available. i started this site before i even knew what a class was(regretably), and all the code is on the timeline in different frames.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Cast Error When Redispatching Event?

Aug 24, 2009

Can someone explain me why when I listen for a custom event and then redispath it it is redispatched as an Event instead of an object of custom event type ?

Exemple : You make un custom event, name it CustomEvent.

In a first class you dispatch an instance of this event and it is managed by a method in a second class, let's say this one :

[Code]...

I missed probably something in event dispatching process but I don't know what. However I found a solution : In the first event manager, dispatch a copy of the custom event received instead of dispatching the object itself. It works in this case.

Flex :: Event Handler Execution Order?

Jun 23, 2009

I have been trying to understand the way ActionScript's events are implemented, but I'm stuck.I know that AS is single threaded, which means that only one event handler will be executing at a time, and also means that handlers will be executed in a deterministic order*.For example, consider the following code:

1: var x = {executed: false};
2: foo.addEventListener("execute", function(){ x.executed = true; });
3: foo.dispatchEvent(new Event("execute"));

Flex :: Not Receiving Event.Complete Callback

Feb 12, 2010

I created an image uploader for an app I am working on. I first used php for the server side script, and everything worked fine. I found out afterwards I had to use .net, so I created new serverside scripts. The problem I am having is that my event.COMPLETE listener is never firing. I can receive data back using a DATAEVENT listener, but then it stops at this error:
Error #2044: Unhandled IOErrorEvent:. text=Error #2036: Load Never Completed.

Here is how I am sending my file.
var fileRefReq:URLRequest = new URLRequest(FILE_UPLOAD_TEMP);
var fileReqVars:URLVariables = new URLVariables();
fileReqVars.subdir = "Temp";
fileRefReq.data = fileReqVars;
fileRefReq.method = URLRequestMethod.POST;
fileRef.upload(fileRefReq);

The file definitely gets uploaded to the first TEMP directory, but then it breaks with the above error.

Flex :: Event Listener Callback Not Firing?

Jun 17, 2011

In our app, I am periodically noticing that a particular event handler is not firing. 99% of the time, it works fine, but, every so often, it just dies. How can I find out whats happening? Is the DispatchEvent() not happening/working somehow? Is my listener still listening? Did something else catch the event, and not pass it along so that the 'right' listener can get to it ?

Here's a little bit of the code...

Thats a somewhat pruned down version of what the real code is, but I don't think I trimmed out anything important. The key, as I see it is that we fire up the params dialog, then start to listen for the closed event. Then, we show the param dialogs close function. What happens when it fails is that the trace message "caught close event.." is never generated, and, consequently, the closeHandler is not getting called at all.

Actionscript 3 :: Error Reporting From Event Callback?

Aug 17, 2011

I have been experimenting with supplying better debugging information when an error happens in asynchronous code in AS3.

As an example of the poor error reporting be default, take the case where I force a null pointer in a Timer callback (github gist), I get the following stacktrace back on the console:

TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
at Function/<anonymous>()[/[path-to-source-file]/TestClass.as:14]
at flash.utils::Timer/_timerDispatch()
at flash.utils::Timer/tick()

This tells me very little about how the timer callback actually links to my code.

The question is: How can I get information about what code created the callback?

Nov 5, 2009

I rarely use NetStream or any video in my projects, but someone I email with was wondering this, and I have no earthly idea.

Is there any reason why the NetStream's "onMetaData" event cannot be listened to using addEventListener, but instead requires you to use a callback function?

Is it faster, avoiding the overhead of events? Is it to prevent more than one listener being attached?

Actionscript :: IDE - Moving To Frame 2 Breaks Animation

Oct 7, 2009

Let's start off by saying that I am the greenest of green newcomers to the world of Flash and Actionscript. I have created several animations based off of the great camera movement tutorial found here: [URL]Everything works great when I have my actionscript code in a single frame environment. However, I am currently trying to figure out how to create a simple menu/welcome screen that will allow the user to choose which animation to play before returning to the menu and choosing another. When I move my code to frame 2 (as I am trying to create my menu on frame 1), my animation does not work correctly. As I am so new to this, I'm afraid there are very basic concepts I do not understand and this is preventing me from effectively researching and troubleshooting this problem on my own.

Using the Kirupa racing example tutorial files, if I simply move the actionscript to frame 2 I see a continuous loop which seems to include the initial placement of the scene's components, but it doesn't stay in the frame to allow for any camera movement or to continue with the animation. This makes sense to me, as it is continuously looping between frames 1 and 2. When I attempt write this code on Frame 1: gotoAndPlay(2);, I simple see static images of the scene's elements (the tire and the car) and no animation. I had expected it to play as normally as it does when the actionscript is located on Frame 1. What basic concepts am I missing here and does anybody have any advice on how I should proceed?

Flex :: 3 - Invalidation In Show Event Handler Breaks Lifecycle

Oct 20, 2011

Create a tab navigator (or viewstack, whatever) and add a couple tabs. On your tab add a show event handler. Inside the event handler call invalidateProperties() and invalidateDisplayList() on one of the children of your tab. Put a break point on the childs commitProperties() and updateDisplayList(). You'll notice that the updateDisplayList() gets called before commitProperties() which results in incorrect behaviour.

I noticed this problem when setting a DataGrid's dataprovider from inside the show handler. Setting the dataProvider causes the grid to invalidate both properties and displayList, updateDisplayList() will get called first, then commitProperties() which will result in the grid not updating the rows. It appears the root of the problem is that the show event gets dispatched from within LayoutManagers validateDisplayList() loop, so invalidating a child object from within the show handler results in its updateDisplayList() getting called immediately.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Exporting Classes On A Later Frame: Breaks All Nested Timelines?

Jul 14, 2009

I have a large flash app (> 100k) w/ its own looping preloader animation in the first frame. This preloader should happily spin while the app loads. (For various important reasons, I can't use a separate SWF to load the app.)Bug:When I export the classes in a later frame, all of the preloader animation's simple timeline commands (stop, gotoAndPlay) stop working.Test:I can reproduce this in a very simple test:The red ball should stop (as seen in example 1) and doesn't (example 2).Question:Do any of you know how to get around this? I've been trying everything I can think of and haven't found a solution. If this is unbeatable, it seems the only real timeline preloader you can do is a code-drawn progress bar

Javascript :: Android: Disable Pinch Zoom And Pass Event To Flash Content

Apr 14, 2011

I have a flash application written in actionscript 2.0 that shows vector architectural maps and works perfectly on common web browsers. There are many interactions with javascript functions called by user events on the webpage, such as zooming to a certain x,y point. This event is usually accomplished via the mouse wheel.

Now I have to make sure that the thing works on tablet pc, in particular the Galaxy Tab. The first thing I have to fix is that, obviously, there is no mouse wheel and the user naturally tries to pinch zoom the flash application, with the result of zooming the entire web browser.

What I need is to listen to the multitouch gesture and, when a pinch zoom event is called, disable the default zooming event and call a javascript/flash function that allows my flash app to zoom only the objects that need to be zoomed: in few words, the browser stays still and only a part of the flash zooms in or out.

I already have working javascript functions to call flash object functions for the zooming purpose, so I just need to connect them to some android things that tell me when the user tries to pinch zoom in and when he tries to pinch zoom out (and possibly the x,y point of zoom).
