ActionScript 3.0 :: Main Class - Setting Object In Library
Jul 21, 2011
I have a Main class that I call from the .fla file. Everything work fine until I set a object in the Library "export for actionscript"... after that the stage didn't work anymore, the stage now return "null", just because I checked an object to "export for actionscript". I'm using flash cs5 and it never happen to me with the early version of flash.

I'm trying to load a RSL library into a flash animation developed with Flash CS5 IDE, that extends a custom class and implements an interface. I have reduced the problem to the simplest setup and find that I can have my main class extend another class or implement an interface, but not do both at the same time if I want to load an RSL.I have a very simple class to extend:
import flash.display.Sprite;
public class MySprite extends Sprite
{[ code]...........
but if I want both I get the VerifyError: Error #1014 with MySprite not found and ReferenceError: Error #1065.

I have question regarding removing instantiated objects. Let's say i have a main class in which i instantiate a custom video player (or whatever) class:

From my experience, if i don't destroy for example event listeners from my VideoPlayer class and just remove VideoPlayer class the way described they still get fired with null exception messages etc. This is something that's bugging me for a while so i would really like to know what's best thing to do here?

I'm new to Flash AS3. I started making a game and I am a bit confused. Let's assume that I want to create a game that has multiple levels/modes, how can I do this in an object orientated way?
When i create games in other languages e.g. XNA C#, i create a separate class then create an object of that class within the main class and run the game based on a simple statement.

I've found several threads on the MOUSE_UP "problem" with AS3 where onReleaseOutside, in its AS2 form, doesn't work. The solution being to add a MOUSE_UP event to the Stage.
Question is, if I have a slide-bar class, a simple dragger, its it happens to be added to a movieclip thats in another movieclip etc, do I have to adjust my class continually so that I use: this.parent.parent.parent etc. to get to the Stage to set this listener? I can't just set it using Stage.addListener.
I think this looks cryptic - but to those that have run into this specific MOUSE_UP issue, I'm sure this will look familiar.

I have the following as code in a separate file placed in the root folder of the swf file. The as file is the class for a MovieClip in the library.When i manually place the library symbol on the stage, the MC works fine and draws the square with the nodes. However, when I try to create a copy using ' new sqMC();' code, I get an error.
Code:
package {
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
import flash.events.Event;
import flash.geom.Point;

I have a class, and I'm trying access an object outside of that class. For example, in my class I have function: onNodeLoad(node:Object)with that function I can access the properties of node just fine, but outside the class I cannot.In the function that is inside the class, I can trace (node. title)I want to be able to do that trace on the main timeline.[code]So right now, in my main timeline, trace(con.node) comes up null.I've tried to declaring _node public, private, public static.

Got to the point where the hole in my AS3 knowledge is getting large!Realising I have confusion about the relationship of:Body of code on first frame of AS3 file.(Which I have so far used to create instances of library objects using addchild and make calls to class code).Is this code called the document code? What do people call it?Numerous classes linked together by extending each other etc.Library objects (usually graphical objects)Should it be done differently? have the following problems due to lack of understanding:Addchild complicated from a class but straight forward in main body code.Cant call functions on the main body code from classes, because class code does not know the main body code exists?

i have a flash file with a number of movieclips in the library - various bubbles that can be popped at a clilck. The fla has a document class - BubbleGame.as, and the various bubble mcies in the library are all exported for action script, (using their own names, but) with a mutual Base Class - BubbleBase.as, in order that all the various bubble movie clips have the same behavior: load in a random position, play out their own timelines, be popped when clicked, and if not popped - reload in another position.
This is all working very well, however, I want the movie clips removed if they hit an object on the stage. The object has an instance name of sym_mc, and I have tried various bits of code to cause the bubble to be removed when it hits that object, but i either get errors or nada.
I tried doing the hitTestObject code in both the document class and the base class. It seems more appropriate to have it in the base class - BubbleBase.as (below), because that tells the bubbles what to do.

determine the base class of a Flash library object at runtime, using Actionscript? The toString method gives me the class of the object, but what I'd really like to determine is the superclass of the object. So, if I have an Actionscript class called "Fruit" and I created many different Fruit types in the Flash library ("Cherry", "Apple", etc.), is there a way in code I can determine that an "Apple" is a child of "Fruit"?

In my child swf I am using the sound from library with "attachSound". I also use the play/pause button controls of this sound alongwith the other animation.Now when I load this into my main swf file with "loadMovie", It plays fine but no sound. I found that this is due to no sound linkage in my main file library.I want to share my child swf's library with main file's library.

What happens when an object which has a function currently being executed has all its references removed?I want to have a dialog box type object held in an array by the main class for my program, and when the dialog needs to be closed, I want it to be removed from the array during that close-screen function. My question is, assuming the dialog box object is in all other ways eligible for garbage collection, what happens to the code it's supposed to be executing?
Edit for clarification:The array is a layer of visual elements in my program, of which the dialog box is one. The idea is that the "OK" button (or whatever) that closes the box will also remove it from the array of objects being displayed at the same time.

What I have is some actionscript that displays an image from an external folder. All I have to do is specify the location of the folder, e.g,
Code:
var path = "icons/"
However, this is going to be used as a widget that people can embed on their site, I can specify the full URL to the icons folder and the app works, but to save bandwidth I've imported the images into the flash library under the folder "icons". All I need to do is set the path variable to the icons folder in library and it should work by the loading the images from the library rather than loading the images from my site.

Is there a way to set the tab index on a button loaded (addChild method) from the library? Granted, you can easily add the tab index to the same button if it's on the stage, but I see no way to add it to the button if it's just chilling in the library..

I am trying to create a class library in the documents folder on my mac to save reusable .as classes. I tried following the tutorial on gotoandlearn about this, but it doesn't seem to be working out. I set the path in the prefs in flash using the browse button, and then set up the import line in my .fla. When I test, I get errors that say that flash can't find the dir that I am trying to use. Here are some details...
This is the dir structure that I am trying to use to store my classes.
This is how I am trying to link up to the classes using import in flash.
Here is the preference settings that I am using to get flash to look in the dir structure above to find classes to import.

Summary: I don't quite understand how the import/export URLs for symbols in a runtime library work. I can't figure out how I can set them so that the runtime library will be properly loaded and accessible for other swfs to import from, if I want it to work both in a local environment (on my harddrive), and from a remote environment (on a web page).
Relative URLs seem to work great for the hard-drive case, but fail for the web page. Is there a magic way to set the relative URL to work from the web too? And/or, is there some way of manually loading up the RSL at runtime and making the importing swfs import from that loaded copy, rather than having Flash doing it behind the scenes based on the import URL set in the symbol? Following is a longish description of what I'm trying to do, and why... I'm trying to figure out if we can use RSLs to contain common UI controls for our next project. I'm running into an organizational issue that I can't quite figure out - how to get the RSLs to work in both a local development/debugging environment, and on a production web environment, with the same exporting/importing URLs.
Here's what my setup would look like. Say I have a main application main.swf, an RSL lib.swf, and a UI module dialog.swf. Main.swf loads or embeds dialog.swf. lib.swf exports some symbols that dialog.swf imports. On a local development environment, these swfs are found in folders like so:

[URL]
Here is the problem. If I set the export/import url for symbols in lib.swf to "assets/lib/lib.swf" (relative to the location of main.swf), the runtime library gets loaded fine in the local environment. But in the web environment, it does not load - the player just shows the "..." graphic indicating it is trying to load.
Alternatively, I can use "http:/myapp.com/assets/lib/lib.swf" as the export/import url. Now, it will work in the web environment. However, in the local environment, dialog.swf will load symbols from the lib.swf that is out on the web, not the one that is local. But I need it to load from the local version, so that designers can muck about with the assets and see the results locally before publishing to the web.
Is there some alternative way to set up the swf's, or way to set the URLs, or some other hoop I can jump through that will make the RSL load properly in either environment without having to manually change URLs all the time?
(Details: I am using Flash Builder 4, CS 5, Action Script 3, Flash Player 10... No Flex! My example omits some details from my actual setup, such as the fact that we are using a preloader to load the main application, and a php script on the web page to start the preloader.)

how to import a SWC file directly in ActionScript, without setting a library path to the file.To exemplify, I need something like this:
package
{
[Embed(source = 'Library.swc')] // This line won't work, of course...
import ClassInsideSWC;
[code]....
Besides, I don't want to (I can't, in fact) import the SWC by loading it with Loader class.
Edited Just to add more info about the problem, I'll showcase my scenario with more details...I have a class SubClass that wil be independent from the rest.It will extend a class SuperClass that is inside the SWC/SWF...This SWC/SWF have the whole framework.I can't compile every class inside a single SWF.Every part of my framework is a SWF apart and will be downloaded by Loader class on runtime.

I created an flv video player using Flash Builder 4. This "BasicVideoPlayer" project is compiled into a SWC that will be eventually be used to create other video players that extend the functionality. One of the features is a view that appears when the video has finished playing that displays a "Play Again" button. This "Play Again" view has its own class, "BasicPlayAgain", that accepts a graphic asset that is exported from a .fla file that contains all of the graphic/UI assets.
In my new project, "EnhancedVideoPlayer", I'm using the BasicVideoPlayer SWC as a library to create a new video player that will add more functionality to the "Play Again" view; specifically it will add more buttons to that view.The EnhancedVideoPlayer uses a default class that extends the BasicVideoPlayer class. The BasicVideoPlayer class has a member called "playAgainScreen" whose type is BasicPlayAgain. The EnhancedVideoPlayer needs to override the playAgain member and recast it as EnhancedPlayAgain so it can control the new buttons properly.

Library symbol "Card" is linked to class "Card" which extends "MovieClip". Library symbol "Card" contains a card background image.Library symbol "Ace" is linked to class "Ace", which extends class "Card". Library symbol "Ace" contains a TextField with a big letter "A".So we have Ace extends Card which extends MovieClip. Ace therefore extends MovieClip, but does not DIRECTLY extend MovieClip.When I drop an instance of Ace on the stage and compile the clip, all that shows up is the big letter A. However, I expected the background image from Card to be included, since Ace extends Card, and the Card symbol contains the background.It seems like Flash ignores symbol content unless it belongs to the top-level class being instantiated.I think it's LAME that one symbol can't extend another. The IDE could easily draw Card as a non-editable background while I'm editing Ace which extends it, and it should instantiate Card's content and then Ace's content when an Ace is instantiated.

I am new to actionscript and having trouble running an external swf that I imported into my main fla library. The external swf I created is an image with keyboard interactivity (essentially text appearing with the image when you tap on a key). On import, I created AS 3 linkage by going into the properties window of the swf in the main library. In the properties window I gave the linkage a class name of "balloon" and checked "export for actionscript." After that I wrote up the code in the first frame of my main Timeline to display the swf. When I test my movie the swf image appears but the text appears without any keyboard interactivity and loops on and off. I am unsure why this is happening and want the external swf to play as it would on its own. Keep in mind the external swf on its own works fine and only displays the text when a key is pressed.Here is the code in the main fla:
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
var myMovieClip:MovieClip = new balloon();
