ActionScript 3.0 :: OOP Concept - Including Exits = New Array - Structure Level Class?

May 20, 2009

I'm dabbling in OOP, but I'm nowhere near proficient yet. I have two classes, house() and town(). In house's constructor, I want to define an exit from the house to town. I've set up a Doors and Exits array in the base class, and in house, I add town to it:

Doors = new Array(new trigger());
Exits = new Array(new town());

This way, I can check if the player is colliding with the trigger, and if so, I can set level to Exits[i] or wherever it is. My problem is, including Exits = new Array(new town()); in house's constructor calls town's constructor, and town has an array Exits, which leads back to house and so on. So my question is: How would I get around this problem or structure my level class? Is it possible to use "town" to get to new town(); without manually checking if("town"){ new town(); } etc. Basically, I want to tell flash to create a new town() WHEN I need it, not necessarily during the initial construction, but I don't want to have to manually call "new town();"

ActionScript 3.0 :: Application Level Vs Document Level Class Paths?

Oct 2, 2010

This is making me a little kooky today. I thought I could defined a library path in PREFERENCES > ACTIONSCRIPT > ACTIONSCRIPT 3.0 SETTINGS then that library would be available to all AS3 FLA files, but that doesn't seem to work for me. If I use the PUBLISH SETTINGS and define the library path everything is fine.

Is there something that I could have done to disable the application level class path functionality? I guess I'm trying avoid having to set the library path for every new FLA I'm making.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Main Class And Game Class Structure?

Feb 19, 2011

I´m making a game and now I wonder if it´s good practice to have a class named Main for my game. I was thinking about to have a Preloader, Console and Game classes. Now I don´t know anymore. Maybe it´s better to have a Main class that loads including a preloader, which loads Console wich loads Game.

That´s the better way to making a game application? I´m talking about best practices.

why if yes there has to be a Main class that extends Sprite?

Sep 23, 2009

[Code].....

I`m instancing a Character and a Player in the Main Timeline, all in frame 1.
When I use: ""player.attack(character)"" it works fine by itself.

So I added the if (defender._hp <= 0) this.win() which gives me the following error:

1061: Call to a possibly undefined method win through a reference with static type Character.

"defender" is a Character instance, "this" is a Player instance and "win()" is a Player method. I try to call the Player method inside a Character method using the Player instance adding the "." and his method name

Do I really need to define the win() function in the Character class? Is there a bypass to use a subclass method in a parent class method if it`s called from an instance of the subclass?

Flash :: ActionScript 3 Package Structure And Directory Structure

Jan 23, 2011

I seem to run into compile issues in Flash Builder when I import 3rd-party libraries at the wrong level in the directory structure. For example, sometimes I'll import a library one level too deep into its directory tree, and the package explorer ends up excluding the prefix root-level package, usually "com." or "net.". Even though the content of the source itself doesn't change, this will cause compile errors.

Thus: Is it a 1) convention or 2) language requirement that a class's package structure (e.g., "foo.bar.Class") must match its path location (e.g., foo/bar/Class.as)?
If it's a language requirement, why is it a requirement? Wouldn't that overdetermine the package structure, since it is already specified in the source code and quite happily consuming the first three to eight columns of each line? If it's not a language requirement, are my compile errors just a result of Flash Builder enforcing the convention?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Creating Reusable Class - Package Structure?

Nov 19, 2009

I have been working on creating a package of reusable code for myself. I frequently create projects that have a set of panels, which I re-skin for each particular project, and each panel has its own body of functionality.There are about 10 different panels that could be used in a given project, but not each panel is used in every project. Some projects use 5, some use 8, some 10 etc. My problem is that when migrating the panels to a new project, I don't nessicarily want to have every single panel in the library with appropriate exports etc. if it's not going to be used in the project.

For example

PHP Code:

package panelPack {public class Main extends MovieClip{public function Main(){}public function activatePanel1():void{var panel1:Panel1 = new Panel1();}public function activatePanel2():void{var panel1:Panel1 = new Panel2();}public function acti

[code]...

Then I have something like a config class that would have code like this:

PHP Code:

activatePanel1();activatePanel3();activatePanel5();

Then each class is something like this, referencing a library item that is exported:

PHP Code:

package panelPack {public class Panel1 extends Panel{public function Panel1(){var closeButton:SimpleButton = this.closeB;var submitButton:SiimpleButton = this.submitB;..........}}}
I don't have to have panel1, panel2.....panel10 in the library if i'm only activating 1, 3, and 5!If i don't have those items in the library i get all kinds of undefined properties buttons etc. Everything that in the MC that gets exported.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Do Any Events Fire When The Flash Player Exits

Dec 5, 2011

I use a LocalConnection object to prevent being able to run our SWF multiple times on the same computer. The problem is that this connection can remain in place even when the SWF which called it closes.

I have:

1) An External Interface call to dispose() all HTML pages call dispose() on pageunload which closes the connection.... But this is unreliable because if the browser crashes, you are locked out of the SWF

2) I tried some crazy try/catch.  If SWF A exists and SWF B tries to be initialised.... SWFB cannot connect so it sends a function to SWFA to dispose(). This should free the connection for SWFB to connect to?  But this does not work well either because sometimes a localconnection can be in use but calling "dipose()" throws an error, often because the LocalConnection swf which should be available is already gone.

What this all comes down to, is that I need a way to detect when the player closes, so i can close the localconnection.

stage.addEventListener(Event.EXIT, onExit);
function onExit(e:Event): void
{
if (localconnection)

ActionScript 3.0 :: Website Architecture Using MVC Concept

Jan 2, 2010

I'm developing a library + workflow for easy (hierarchical) navigation management inside website or application. From popular - can be somehow compared with Gaia Framework and PageManager from Soma Framework (I do personally don't like these implementations because they quite limit development even if they say they don't). I used to develop website so that each section(sub-section, sub-sub-section...) is an instance of a custom class (that extends DisplayObject: Sprite, MovieClip or whatever Flex container even), that contains logic and data in "single layer" manner... and all the view coponents aswell (texts, thumbnails, whatever).

Each of those sections is implementing INavigableObject interface and has navigationHelper (way of composition pattern), which helps with all navigation stuff. So. This approach was OK. But with my last project I felt need to use MVC design pattern, so I decided to refine my navigation stuff. And so therefore I have a question: how does hierarchy looks like when using MVC (any implementation.. custom one or any popular framework like PureMVC..) for website development?

I also want it to check another movieclip called 'leaf9', and see if it's current frame is at less than a particular frame number (73), because if so I want it to start playing forward. Once it reaches this frame number (73), I want to cause linkstween_mc to become visible and hit9button (also a movieclip) to become enabled. My current script does absolutely nothing to leaf9

ActionScript 1/2 :: User Enters And Exits One Movieclip Button Changes Color?

I currently have a slideshow-style navigation site.  There are five buttons on the bottom and when the user clicks each button, it triggers a nested movieclip to play.  I would like the button to be highlighted when the corresponding movieclip is playing, but when they click another button and another movieclip plays, I want the button to go back to its original color.

The problem is that the movieclips that are playing are nested two levels down and the buttons have to be on the main timeline.  I think I might need an event listener to see if a certain nested movieclip is playing, to know to change the button color.  It seems to easy but I can't figure it out,

Flash :: Access MainTimeline Symbol Using Class-level Embed?

Jan 18, 2012

Here's the scenario: We have a creative team that operates in Flash CS5.5 and produces SWF assets which have both graphics elements and actionscript code in them, and an engineering team which authors .as files and builds "code SWFs". The code SWF files must load or embed the creative assets and interact with the code therein for our apps to function.

For iOS mobile development, there is another consideration - it is not possible to load runtime code in an AIR app packages for iOS because of Apple TOS (see related question). Hence, it is not possible to use a Loader to load SWFs in an iOS environment and retain their code.

Embedding a SWF into an ActionScript file the standard way results in a Loader that loads the embedded SWF directly as bytes. This results in access to the top-level, main timeline as follows:

ActionScript 3.0 :: Understanding A Basic Scripting Concept

Jan 16, 2010

I'm currently reading the book Learning ActionScript 3.0 and have dificulties understanding some programing basics due to my total lack of prior programing knowledge.For example now I'm looking at this script from the book that traces a list of all display objects on the stage and their children:[code]I understand everything except one thing. When there is an object with children (DisplayObjectContainer), the function traces the object but doesn't proceed and calls itself starting all over again this time analyzing the first child of the object. And if the child also have children itself the list will branch out until there is an object without children.What I don't understand is how the function at this point knows how to return to the last parent object and continue to analyzes  its other children if any.For example when the function analyzes the stage of a scene with the following content how does the function know to continue analyzing child0. To me, looking at the code, I would expect the function to exit after listing [object StaticText]. I have hard time understanding what makes the function go back to largeContainer and continues with its child0 and so on.[code]This all what the book says regarding this which is not enough for me to understand this process:the function calls itself again. passing in the object currentlybeing inspected. This concept is called recursion. A function calling itself mayseem redundant, but it can be very useful. In this case, each time the functionis called, it receives a new display object to analyze, so the function reportsthe contents of that specific display object. The result is a complete walkthroughof all display objects, no matter how many children each may have.
