ActionScript 3.0 :: Use BitmapData Class To Capture An Animated Movieclip?

I'm trying to use BitmapData Class to capture an animated movieclip and adding it to the display list by using addChild, but it's causing my computer to bog down because it's adding a zillion children. what do I do to remove the old, or rather, update the current child with the new one?

I'm trying to use BitmapData to capture a movieclip that has been created dynamically.

As u must have noticed, the movieclip i wanna draw, namely _root.VESSEL, itself contains several other clips (eg _root.VESSEL.db). The problem is that the clip doesnt get drawn at all! All i get is a white rectangle of the size i've created the bitmapData. But nothing of that movie clip has been captured.

is it that the BitmapData cannot capture the details of a clip if it has child clips?? Coz here, VESSEL itself was created empty, and all the new shapes are actually being placed as movie clips inside other empty clips that were created in VESSEL.

I am trying to grab part of stage area using BitmapData and copyPixels method:

bmd = new BitmapData(stage.stageWidth, stage.stageHeight);
bmdRect = new BitmapData(320, 240);
rectangle = new Rectangle(360, 20, 320, 240);
bmdRect.copyPixels(bmd, rectangle, new Point());

The result i get is an empty .jpg I m pretty sure that the error is in the Bitmap procedure and not the saving one...

I'm using Flash 8, with this code in the first frame:

When I publish the file, I'm getting the following error message in the Output panel:

This is the third thread I've written for my current project (1st was answered perfectly, 2nd failed [but I still figured it out anyways]) but I'm not sure if there is a solution to this problem. I can't really explain my problem, so once again I've included a helpful animation to show you what I mean. Bear in mind that the pale-blue box represents the movie clip's borders, and those borders are usually changed to include the animation (instead of the borders moving with the animation, the borders get bigger).

For the animation problem, I've already got a solution: create an invisible movie clip that has the exact size and shape of the animated movie clip and make it follow the movie clip as it animates, and make the hitTest check the invisible movie clip instead of the animated one. As for the rotation problem, well, I don't know how to fix it. Is there a way to change that?

I've written a simple MovieClip replacement that converts an existing imported MovieClip to a sequence of BitmapData. This removes the requirement for Flash to render vector data in the MovieClip on each frame.

But BitmapData has a huge memory footprint. I've tried converting the BitmapData to a ByteArray and using the compress() method. This results in a significantly smaller memory footprint. But it has proven impractical. For each redraw, I tried uncompressing()'ing the ByteArray, then using SetPixels to blit the data to the screen, then re-compressing() the frame. This works but is terribly slow.

So I was wondering if anybody else has an approach I could try. In Flash, is it possible to compress bitmap data in memory and quickly blit it to the screen?

I wonder how native animated GIFs work in Flash. Does it uncompress them to BitmapData behind the scenes, or is frame decompression done on the fly?

I want to return bitmapData from a symbol that is embedded in a flash swf file. background01 is the class name exported to as3 in the flash swf file. As you can see from above I'm finding the swf with no problem. and I'm pullin the data back from the swf file with no prob. I can type addChild(new background01) and the image will show up. But when I've tried to cast to a bitmap , bitmapasset and movieclip. It always returns null. I want to get access to the bitmapdata of this image/movieclip. It should be returning a vertex circle drawn in flash and created to be a movieclip symbol. So what I would expect to be returned would be a MovieClip.

I am using BitmapData to draw the objects in my game. But, I'm not sure I am using this in the best way.In each class I have a draw method where I call a renderer where copy the pixels of my object to the game canvas.For example, I have an Avatar class and its contains a BitmapData instance. There is a method where I draw my character into the bitmapdata of this class and I apply the filters or visual modification I need frame by frame. When I finish this process I copy the result to the main canvas. It is in a renderer class that contains another bitmapdata.I believe this is not the best way to render the objects of a game.

I have a problem concerning the size of an animated MovieClip.What I want to do is drawing a frame (.graphics.drawRect(...), etc.) around a loaded image file. This works well on loaded images that are static, no matter if it is a jpg, png or a non-animated swf.However, if I load a swf that is animated, its width and height properties are simply wrong. Much too small. They are, however, always the same wrong values for the same animated swf.I also tried with getBounds and getRect on the loaded swf (which I put in as a MovieClip), with the same results.What's up with this and how can I get the real size of the swf?

What we could do would be to insert a fully transparent layer into each swf that would define its size. That would hopefully make the MovieClip always have the correct size. But I would prefer a working way during runtime that workaround works, but I'd still prefer a way that does not involve additional work for our artists (minimal as it might be).

Im using a lot of movieclips in an app.Its hitting the performance limits.Im using .png files in animated movieclips.Looking in the clip it says bitmap as type.. source...pngI used .png because i want the alpha background possibility.I then went into some of the movieclips and changed properties convert to bitmap (althoug technicly they already were according to flash)After this i feel the performance has slightly improved.Is this true or just in my mind & wishfull thinking.
