Actionscript 3 :: Adding Sprites To A Container From Flash?

i am currently working in flashbuilder and i imported a swc wich containes a ratingcontainer. That ratingcontainer contains 5 ratings, they are labeled "Rating1", "Rating2, "Rating3", "Rating4", "Rating5".These are placed on the stage. i also have a sprite called "Star" and when i for example click on "Rating4" then every Rating from 1 to 4 should get stah Star sprite added to them, when i click again on Rating 3 or something then only 3 the first 3 should have the star added. i tried the following:

I have a loop that goes through data from a book and displays it. The book is not consistent in it's layout so I am trying to display it in two different ways. First way(works fine) is to load the text from that section in to a panel and display it. The second way is to create a new panel (panel creates fine) and then add collapsable panels(nested) to that panel. Here is the code from the else loop.

The error I get is: ReferenceError: Error #1069: Property panel4.4 not found on components.readTest and there is no default value.
I have tried setting the "name" property instead of the "id" property.

How can I add sprites in a for loop?
Example:

Basicly I'm adding dynamicaly sprites and textfields, which i populate from xml, in for loop. I'm building sort of table, so for every sprite, I'm adding new data in textfields.I've loaded xml and passed data to 2 xmllists, both traced and doing fine... Later on I add data from xmllist to array which then I'm looping in for loop.Problem is that from 1st xmllist, 6 out of 7 textfields are visible, 1 can't be found nowhere :/ from the 2nd xmllist only 1 out of 4 are visible...I've tried everything, tracing them returns that they are visible, on good position, filled with text, contrasted color from background.
PS: here is the part probably causing the problems..

I know now how to add a load of MCs from the library to the stage. Do I still use MovieClips!!!?I have a simple question::: How do I populate a 'container' MC with 'instances' from the library? I am trying to place a child swf into a parent swf via a function that is in our code library which by default places it at 0, 0. Right now it's just a matter of calling the function and in the parenthesis is the name of the swf. How can I give this swf an instance name so that I can reposition it or manipulate it however I want. I assume I need to drop it into a container but I'm getting null errors when I try that.

Yes, another one of those pour souls attempting to escape the confines of AS2 and venturing into the AS3 world! I'm simply trying to dynamically add an image frame (imgframe) to the stage, sticking an image holder (imgholder) into the image frame mc and then loading an image into the image holder mc. Here's the code I've been using as a test, but it spits out errors saying that a term is undefined on "mainmask_mc.imgframe.addChild(imgholder);" code. I've tried changing it to various things, but nothing works.

Rather than typing out each child to add to a container mc, I wish to use a for loop to do so. However, in AS2, when adding an instance of an object, I could specify a unique name based on the current number of the loop. In AS3, I dont know how to even give the same object a unique name if multiple versions a re being pulled from the library to the Stage!

The correct code to constrain movie clips to a container movie clip (or sprite or whatever) in the fashion I was looking for is this:

I have here 2 options here of adding movieclips to a container, but I don't know which one is better. I want to know the pros and cons of each one. Also, What of the options is faster?. (i mean, which one uses less processor and memory resources?.

I am trying to create a container MovieClip with several TextField elements contained within it. I then need the TextFields to react to ROLL_OVER or MOUSE_OVER. This works fine if the fields are placed outside of the container, but not when I do

The TextFields are added after the container, and new ones may be created or removed later during the running of the movie. I've tried changing the value of container.mouseChildren but that didn't seem to make a difference.

I have a custom component extending Group and containing a viewstack child. The component is coded in actionscript.
When instantiating the component in mxml like so:

...I would like to override whatever function that adds the children to the parent Group and add them to the child viewstack instead but I can't seem to find where the adding occurs. Breakpoints in addChild and addElement shows that they are not called during the add.

I'm designing a calculator-like application in Flash for a school IT project. I made the layout in photoshop, and want to lay out the buttons with sprites (was just on CSS so addicted to those things xD ). I've tried googling and have found something like you can use sprites like buttons (which is good), but I can't figure out how to apply bitmaps to sprite backgrounds vs. plain colors.

Just curious, if I have a sprite on the stage with the alpha set to 0 does that take up just as much memory as a sprite that is visible? I imagine it does because it draws the sprite to the stage and then it has to set the alpha to zero.

i created 5 pages, each of which contains several movie clips (text, graphics, forms, etc). There is one specific page however that contains autogenerated content via. sprites. If i happen to land on this page, the sprites will appear, but when i transition to another page, they are still there except for the non-sprite stuff (disappear). Im ripping my hair out on this one, i managed to get a few of the sprites to remove but some are still appearing. Below shows the layout of the one thats not being removed;

In a Flex Mobile project I have a simple itemRenderer where I'm trying to create an "bubble" texting effect, similar to ichat or iphone (just so you get what im going for). But if the text is longer than the screen it runs off, rather than just going down a line.
If I set Group thats holding the rectangle(to create the bubble effect) and the label to 100% it works and keeps it from exceeding the list containers bounds, BUT the group is always at 100% and looks bad, I'm trying to keep the "bubble" JUST AROUND the text.
Anyway so, at the top of my itemRenderer I tried specifying:

And here's my layout I figured since msg_container has a width of 100% I was hoping bubble_lable_group would just not exceed that but...it doesnt...it just runs off. I tried setting a max width but that does not allow you to input percents. And just to say it 1 more time. I know if i set bubble_lable_group width to 100% it works, and keeps it from going off the edge, but then the rectangle "bubble" stretches all the way across and just looks bad.

i have a flash document with buttons along the top which when clicked display different flash documents below in a container.. now one of these which gets displayed has 2 buttons on the side next to them another container and within that container you get 2 different documents displayed depending on which button you click on the side.
so i have managed to get it so you have the first document displayed within the second container with the buttons to the side, however when you click one of those side buttons to view the second document it appears to display it in the first container as the buttons that were next to it have now gone.. i've tried changing the names of each container so they wouldn't get confused with each other but that seemed to cause it not to work at all.

Is it possible to draw a sprite, on a movieclip, on a specific layer? I have a MC I created in the Flash designer, and it has 3 layers on it, background, some layout stuff, and then some text. In actionscript i've created a Sprite object in code, drawn a rectangle on it, and added it to the stage with addChild (called from within the MC). The problem is, the sprite is always being drawn above all the layout stuff I added in the designer. Is there any way to add the sprite to the MC at a specific layer? In this case the background layer. I tried changing the z on the sprite and no effect.

Just curious to know if empty movie clips or sprite can slow down a application or game.Reason being is because I want to use multiple sprites as containers for my object. So I can easy manage what objects are in front of others. Some points in the game, layers will be empty so I am just curious if I should just make those layers null if they arent being used or will that even make a big difference

I am trying to figure out some optimization techniques for Flash. How can I make Flash run fast when there are so many sprites on the stage, or maybe there is an optimization technique that doesn't involve generating so many sprites?

i have the ingame sprite and it needs to be in StageQuality.LOW due to some prerformance problems, and the hud needs to be in StageQuality.HIGH... but they are in the same stage. I tried changing quality before rendering the ingame (to a big bitmapdata) but changing this property every frame is too expensive.
