ActionScript 3.0 :: Attaching Dynamically-named Bitmaps From Library?
Jun 23, 2009
I've been attempting to attach bitmaps from the library in AS3, and have settled on a piece of code which works:
PHP Code:
var myBitmap:Bitmap = new Bitmap(new pic1(0,0));
myMovieClip.addChild(myBitmap);
[code]......

My problem: I am attaching variable number of MCs dynamically(not in the library), and i have to do so using flash6 or older. How can i use then loadMovie+onClipEvent handler to invoke something, if i am attaching MCs dynamically, and onClipEvent works only on MCs attached on the Stage(actions "on" those mcs, not "inside" them). Probably using classes. Any other option? and if not, can anybody guide me through assigning such class to such mc? EDIT: Ok, i also have done following:
[Code]....
and although the movieClip IS in library, and it DOES have MovieClip class assigned, onData event handler is NOT triggered and nothing is traced. Can the reason be "attachMovie" function?
EDIT2: aha. well, again it happened that attachMovie's methods are not yet initialized, so it was not yet "the proper time to assign" handler onData on those MCs. [only sen knows why ]. So that even trace(mc.stop()); at this point traces undefined, where it should trace [type Function], since stop is MovieClip's class method. Stupidstupidstupid.. relax...

I've been learning AS3 for a while now, and it's my first Actionscript language, but not my first coding language. I've learned a lot so far, but I started off doing things in the not so efficient, or correct ways. I was putting all of my actionscript on frames. I'm trying to get in the habit of doing it the right way now. But I'm having a basic problem. I can't figure out how to load a bitmap from the library in AS3.

I have a large number of bitmaps, all of different shapes and sizes, and all with associated data (i.e. name, description, cost, weight etc). I want to get all these items into AS in a data structure.Based on what I know I could put together an XML file and parse that and then load each bitmap individually, but that could be very slow as it would mean loading lots of little bitmap files one at a time.I could put all the bitmaps into one big bitmap and store their xywidthheight in the xml as well so that I only have to load one bitmap but that seems a bit tricky, especially if I need to add or remove items.
I could embed all this into a class and have it load everything at compile time which is ok but not very friendly to people who aren't programmers and or don't have the source file to recompile.Is there something i can do using maybe flash to create bitmaps with additional properties and put them all in a swf that would be easy to edit by anyone using point and click?

I'm trying to learn AS3 and it hasn't vaguely been going well. I've been looking at dozens of tutorials for 2 days on attaching MovieClips from the library. Everything I've tried gives me errors and I don't know what to do anymore.

In my library I have a bunch of movieclips that are dynamically going to be placed on my stage. Is there a simple method of attaching ActionScript to these movieclips so that when they are used on the stage, they have the script applied to them already?

I am creating a program to play sounds from the library when a button is CTRL + CLICK. I have no problem if I play either of the two sounds on the first frame and then move to other sounds. However, if I navigate past the first sound buttons and try to play later sounds, I get: TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object referenceat soundFile_fla::MainTimeline/playSound11()

I'm building a variable matching game. The player clicks one of four choices and then clicks the answer area. Their choice appears in the area, and if the answer is correct the answer container shifts down, highlighting the next answer area to be filled. Inside the container are a large number of these answer areas (60).
What I am trying to do is have only one be answerable at a time, the highlighted one, so that players can't skip ahead despite seeing the empty spaces left to answer in. What I have right now isn't working, and I could use some outside insight.
Code:
var i:int =1;
function sampleFunction(evt:MouseEvent):void{
if(selection == e.currentTarget.targetCorrect){//targetCorrect is a string set statically
[Code].....
I realize I could use a for loop to add the event listener, but the project really calls for only one answerable area at a time.

Here I attach a movieclip to another movieclip 'a'. It works.
_root.MC_menu.MC_windowI.a.attachMovie(itemFocusInv,attachedItemA,getNextHighestDepth());
Then later I want to remove the movieclip from 'a' so I tried this:_root.removeMovieClip(_root.MC_menu.MC_windowI.attachedItemA);-and variations.But it does nothing!In the first code the first argument is itemFocusInv without quotes because it is variable, once it is attached it doesnt vary but when it is not then the movieclip varys. If attachedItemA doesnt let me remove the movieclip, what will? I tried using _visible and didnt work.
_root.MC_useItem.MC_yes.onRelease = function() {
if(itemSpaceA == "MC_inventory_berry_blue"){
aI = false;

I am attaching a movie clip from the library with this code
PHP Code:
function movie_start(num){ for(i=0;i<num;i++){ var circle = attachMovie("k_circle","k_circle"+i,i) with(circle){ _x = (-50); _y = (-50); } }}
So is there any way of placing Actionscript onto this clip using actionscript I want to place this:
PHP Code:
onClipEvent (enterFrame) { _x += (_root.k_xpos-_x)/_root.k_speed; _y += (_root.k_ypos-_y)/_root.k_speed;}
I have tried a couple of things to no avail...

the problem I've encountered on the home pg flash is that two big buttons and a bike animation should display prior to the photos loading. However, in firefox on both mac and pc(but not everyone's) when you refresh the pg such that it draws from the browser's cache, the buttons and bike animation do not display. Oddly, the photos still load consitently and in time as if those animations did take place. "oddly" because, the code to load the photos is part of an event listener, listening for the completion of the bike animation. So the code executes properly, despite the movieclips not appearing on stage(these movieclips are in library to begin and in my documnt class I instatiate them as follows:
realtors_btn = new RealtorsButton();
buyers_btn = new BuyersButton();
bike = new Bike(X-150);
[Code]....
also, originally I had this same issue in IE, but after switching from swfObject 2.0 to adobe's ac_runactivecontent.js method, I elliminated the issue in IE.

I have an array of external images that I am loading and the number of external images is variable, so I want to be able to create loaders to load them as needed. Is there a way to dynamically create and uniquely name a loader at run time?
Otherwise is there a way to pass the image content off in such a way that it will remain loaded if the loader is used to load other images?

So I've been trying to make dynamically named functions, and while it works, I've run into a couple of problems.
ActionScript Code:
var uServer:String = "irc.epic-chat.net"
var lol:String = "lolz"
var num:Number = 3
[Code].....
If I had something like that ^ what could I add to func to distinguish between whether it is being called by lolz0, lolz1, or lolz2? I was thinking whether there was something like .name I could use, but I couldn't come up with anything.

I have a jpeg that I have exported to actionscript via the library. The jpeg class is "adcouncil". If I want to add it to the stage I would use the following code:
Code:
var adcouncil = new adcouncil1(150,150);
var myImage:Bitmap = new Bitmap(adcouncil)
printMC.addChild(myImage);
The problem is that I want to ad these Bitmaps to the stage dynamically. My first instinct is:
Code:
var adcouncil = new this["adcouncil1"](150,150);
var myImage:Bitmap = new Bitmap(adcouncil)
printMC.addChild(myImage);

So im trying out AS3 and kinda havin some issues. I want to be able to attach a button or a movieclip that I have constructed in the Flash IDE - it contains a textfield, some other movieclips, etc.If i make it a button, I have tried subclassing the simplebutton class, attaching that class to the button, and then creating new instances of that class. That works fine - until I have to access, say, a textfield in the button. It seems that these elements are drawn, but are not accessible (or even connected in any way - i used flash.utils.descibreType(mybutton) and the instance names dont even show up in the XML).
So, I thought about a different route - using a movieclip or sprite, and making it react LIKE a SimpleButton. Not what I had in mind, but whatever. Unfortunately, it seems that when I subclass Sprite or MovieClip, the class has to be made dynamic in order to attach things to it from within the IDE before compilation (as opposed to from actionscript).

I'm trying to get data out of an array. Problem is the array I'm trying to access is different depending on where I'm currently at.
I can get data from a dynamically named variable, like so:
_parent["Menu" + Menui + "Button" + Listi + "Link"]
but now that I want to access one field in an array, instead of a single variable, I don't know the syntax to get at it? Waa. I tried:
_parent["Menu" + Menui + "Button" + Listi + "Link[" + Linki + "]"]
but it didn't like me.
