ActionScript 3.0 :: What Makes Flash Application Works So Slow
Feb 8, 2011Is there any way to figure out what makes my flash application works so slow?

View 4 RepliesI'm working on CS4 / Windows 7. I recently moved from XP where everything worked fine. My problem is that compiling any movie now takes about 40 seconds longer than before. I have been able to narrow down the issue to this. There is folder in my classpath which is on a local network. It is this folder that is causing the issue. Plus, even if this folder is not required at all to compile the movie it slows it down anyway. As soon as that folder is removed from my classpath everything works as it should -- of course, for movies which don't require that folder to compile :-) --. Having said that removing the folder or changing its location is not the solution I'm looking for.
View 1 RepliesI want adobe sockets to send "customized" class object to a server socket(WinSock2). I used socket.writeObject(myClassObj). Actually My flash application and windows application works for string buffer but not for object.
Code:
//Flash
var buffer:String = "God Bless Us";
socket.writeUTFBytes(buffer);
// WinSock2
iResult = recv(ClientSock, recvbuf, recvbuflen, 0);
Is there anything I must do before writeObject() is used.?
Just curious to know if empty movie clips or sprite can slow down a application or game.Reason being is because I want to use multiple sprites as containers for my object. So I can easy manage what objects are in front of others. Some points in the game, layers will be empty so I am just curious if I should just make those layers null if they arent being used or will that even make a big difference
View 1 RepliesI have created a Flash application running in a browser (Firefox 3 on Windows XP). When I move this application from foreground to background and (after some time) viceversa, I notice a considerable slowdown, i.e. for about thirty seconds the application becomes unusable.
My swf is very small (~200 KB), but this swf creates *many* buttons and *many* other graphical widget (with statical images), so the RAM occupied is considerable (~150 MB).
I initially assumed that was caused by the swap mechanism of the operating system or of the browser. This was *not* true, and it was confirmed by the fact that, by default, Mozilla Firefox prevent Windows from swapping out memory when the program is minimized (see config.trim_on_minimize option). Nothing has changed even disabling the paging system of Windows.[code]...
My project works fine in the flash player. However when I upload it online and try to play it in the browser it becomes slow to the point of crashing. It seems to work on chrome, it super slow on IE, and it completely crashes Firefox. It is difficult to debug since it takes a while for me to repetitively upload to the server. What would cause this kind of slow down? Could it be that I have a large number of embedded files using Flashpunk?
View 2 RepliesI just finished porting my AIR application to Flash.It works perfectly fine when I debug it via Flash Builder or when I load the enclosing HTML file in a browser that uses a debugging enabled version of Flash. However, it stops working when I load it a non-debug version of Flash. The "failure" seems to occur when the app tries to send a SOAP message request to our API server. That whole SOAP layer was generated using Flash Builder's Web Services class generation tools.
According to [URL], getStackTrace() is known to cause problems, so I disabled my calls to it but the problem still occurrs.
I had been developing one Flex application , in that users are allowed to upload there own swfs . The problem is, my application has a frame Rate of 11 , if the user tries to upload the swf with higher frame and audio with it( ie Framerate of 24 with AudioFLV ). this makes my application to run at the higher frame rate of that same user uploaded swf.
View 1 RepliesI am trying to make an interactive flash application that works by detecting mouse overs and clicks on various buttons/movie clips and then moves to the appropriate part of the time line. But I am having an issue when I use more than one addEventListener in any one frame. I have attached the code for one such frame below. When I comment out the addEventListner and the other code relating to the followBall function this works fine and directs the user to frame Inlet_Valve_Open_Frame but now only the followBall function is working and when i try to click on the Inlet_Valve_Button movie clip nothing happens.
I have never read all the help files on the adobe flash CS3 as i don't have time and i have built this code up based on examples i have found online. I wanted to include my fla file but it's to big 6Mb. But i have attached the swf so you have an idea what i am doing.
Code: Select allstop();
//1.
stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_MOVE,followBall);

I am using a custom Flex skin to create an active blur/frosted glass effect on the background of floating Panels, TitleWindows, and other containers (similar to http:url....). There is a background image in the Application skin, and potentially any number of other components above and below the active blur component. Here's some relevant code within the skin:
public static const BLUR_FILTER :BlurFilter = new BlurFilter(16, 16, BitmapFilterQuality.HIGH);
private var _bitmapFill :BitmapFill = new BitmapFill;
private var _matrix :Matrix = new Matrix;[code]....
Unfortunately, the performance of this when the component is being resized, and especially when moved, is poor. There is noticeable drag delay and overall slowdown, and this is with only one popped-up TitleWindow in the test application. There is especially poor performance when components inside the TitleWindow are changed (button hover states, etc.)I've attempted to optimized a little bit by avoiding reinstantiation of the blur filter, bitmap fill, and matrix, but this has had little or no effect. I removed the blur at one point, just drawing the Application to a bitmap, and the performance is still poor, so it's clear that it's mostly the BitmapData.draw() call.
I've read about using scrollRect and cacheAsBitmap, but I'm not sure where to apply these properties (or other optimizations I'm not aware of) within the Application or its components.
can i make an actionscript 2 application works in facebook ?
View 0 RepliesI have a quite different problem with resizing. I have a Flexbook component which uses the middle part of screen (center) with a html header menu and footer. The problem: The scaling works perfectly when we run in the local machine ( Flexbuilder). But when we deploy it to the server its like scaling never existed.. The requirement: when user maximizes the window or minimizes it, the Flexbook should be resized to fit the screen.

Does anyone have an idea as to why this happens?The dropdown menus work fine (they are a flash app)The dropdown menus do not work.I'm unfamiliar with how to make a redirect if they just type the url without the 'www'
View 4 RepliesWhat are the rules for something to be a GC root in Flash? I'm using the Flash Builder 4 profiler, and I'm finding odd things are labeled as GC roots in the object reference details (e.g., an Image control that is no longer in the display list, nor static).
View 2 RepliesUsing Flash CS5, when activating Export SWC in the Flash Publish Settings, I end up with a much bigger file (500 ko) than when the SWC is not activated (around 100 ko).
Why is the SWC 5 times bigger ?
I've made a site where an iframe calls to a top navigation element, with a javascript drop down menu. I have it working where the menu drops over a center flash element, but even when the menu is not "dropped" - any element in that area on the flash does not respond to clicks.
I've changed z indexes, and now i cant seem to get the flash file to even be ontop of the iframe -

What makes a camera compatible with flash? I have a camera I purchased from IDS Imaging and it shows up in my camera list in as3 with print out the array made from Camera.names. But when I go to use it, it just doesn't show up. I do have a lens on it, and it can see it working when I used the IDS software provided for testing. I've also been able to make it work in c#, but I want to use it for a flash app I'm developing.
View 1 RepliesI would like to create a button that makes my flash fullscreen.But this line:
stage.displayState = StageDisplayState.FULL_SCREEN;
does not work. Why?(I'm opening my swf directly in Chrome.)
Edit: There seem to be consensus that I should embed in HTML.
I'm developing a kiosk in AS3 that utilizes StageVideo (publishing for FP 10.2 on a Mac Mini). It works fine, except as soon as StageVideo is engaged the mouse becomes visible. This is a public kiosk so I need the mouse to stay hidden.
View 1 RepliesI have flash resizing it's container div by using external interface to call the javascript:[code]Now this appears to work fine in every browser except chrome. For some reason after the div is shrunk back down to size, the flash player looks like it's frozen. It's actually not frozen because if you resize the window the flash player starts playing again and you can see it had made progress since it appeared frozen. This only happens in chrome. Does anyone have any idea why something like this might happen?The site so you can check it out yourself(yes I know it's a broken mess in IE, but I'm kind of ignoring that for now):[code]I've tried different window modes but that doesn't help. The problem is when it resizes the div back down because if I comment that line out the flash never appears to freeze. But I need to be able to resize the div...
View 2 RepliesThere seems to be increasing demand for Silverlight skills, but out of the many new technologies that Microsoft has punted, I've never felt as if it was the next big thing! Am I wrong? Should I be gaining those skills?
There's obviously a well-established competitor in Flash, and there's a host of other Rich Internet toolkits out there, as well as HTML5 on the horizon.
If I invest time now in skilling up, I'm not sure I'll ever see my return on investment...
I've got several custom classes. Let's call them "Character", which is supposed to import and use "Head". Then "Head" imports and uses "Hat". That works just fine...
[Code]....
This runs without a hitch. Simple as pie... But if I try to create a new instance of "Hat" or even define the Hat variable in "Character", it gives me the compile time error: 1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: Hat. If I try to define "Hat" class and create a new instance of "Hat" in my main script, or in "Hat" it works like a charm... If I try to do it in my "Character" it gives me this godforsaken error. I've checked my imports, they're all the same!! Why in the world is it doing this?!
Im trying to set some text using a TLF text inside Flash CS5. I create a TLF text inside a movieclip, to later access and modify that text at runtime, the problem is, when I load the symbol of the movieclip from Flash Builder, it says that it cant be found, If I delete the TLF text, and publish it again, it works ok... I have no compilation errors.
What cuould be the issue?, doesn't matter if I assign an instance name to the text or not, as soon as I place the TLF text there, my main swf's symbol cant be found..
I am trying to get my mc to move up and have copies of that same mc follow about every 40 pixels. Basically a scroll with my "8ball" mc. Showing the mc every 30 pixels in the y-direction. I am using this code in the mc and I get a message saying that the script is causing Flash Player to run slowly.[code]
View 1 RepliesI have a Movieclip on which there is a Video Player in the left and thumbnails in the right. The thumbnails are of other videos and aligned in 4x4 grid. Every thumbnail has a small description (textfield) below it. The number of thumbnails are dynamic and there may be n number of videos. So I have written a pagenation code for them, by which 16 thumbnails will be visible on each page. Now when I change one page to other, I need to rotate the thumbnails with text in Y axis and display new thumbnails and their respective text. I have embedded the font Arial and I am adding the textfields from as3. But even after rotation, the text becomes blurred. I am setting the following properties:
TextFormat:
colorsizealign
TextField:
embedFontsmultilinewordWrapautoSizeantiAliasType
Library Font:
Arial Regular (No Bitmap Text)
I've been adding some components to a Flex 4 app (it was originally Flex 3 but has been ported). Some of these components make the app go blank when it loads. I'm not even able to see the loading progress bar. Just white.
For example, adding
<s:controlBarContent>
<s:Button label="Admin" />
</s:controlBarContent>
To the root tag causes this. I also was able to make it happen when I tried setting a custom components skin from my style sheet instead of from the skinClass property.
I've been thinking about flash and html5 and though each of them can draw circles, rectangles, curves, and do things with images, doesn't it really come down to the artwork? Game play aside (I know ugly games can be fun), all the talk about which looks best canvas or flash or something else, kind of moot? Don't the great games, graphically speaking, have great artwork and modeling so that as long as the engine can handle it, the programming anything other than events associated with those models and artwork doesn't matter? I'm watching my kid play Frontiersville on Facebook and I'm thinking, I could program those events but it's the artwork that's grabbing people and good gameplay keeps them. In the end does the platform really matter for games?
View 2 RepliesI'm no expert in actionscript and certainly not in AS3 but I managed to create (witfrom this:a eleastic string effect from a point to a draggable movieclip.Problem is the script seems to crash flash or the browser when I test it. (Not right away just when I'm playing around with the movieclip)Sinse I'm in over my head in the script I compiled I'm not exactly sure whats wrong.bit of google research hinted that it might have something to do with removeChildAt() wich I changed from removeChildAt(0) to removeChildAt(1) to prevent it from removing my movieclip.Hope somebody has the patience to read through my script to see what I did wrong.
Object(this).leaf_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, mouseDownHandler);
stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, mouseUpHandler);
var origX:int = Object(this).leaf_mc.x + 1;

I was just wondering if there was any code that makes flash player play the timeline in reverse. For example, if you made a movieclip in frame 1 to go to another place on frame 10 using motion tween, could you possibly make a button and code it so that it plays backwards to a 'stop' point or the start?
View 6 RepliesI have a strange problem. I use flash.net.FileReference to let the user upload files to the server. The strange thing is that sometimes when I doubleclick a file in the select file dialog flash jumps to a previews frame.
