Referencing Other Movieclips Within Actionscript Class

Jan 17, 2010

I have externalized the actionscript code of a movieclip into a separate class files.This movieclip requires references to some other clips on the stage. What I am currently doing to reference those clips is by using Movieclip(this.parent).otherclip but somehow that feels wrong.Is there a better way to pass in the required references into a class extending from Movieclip inside of the constructor? Or what is the recommended pattern here?

Referencing A PHP String Inside A Function?

Feb 21, 2009

I am currently connecting to a PHP string in actionscript. While I'm having no trouble importing the variables like so:

Code:

this(variable);

I am having trouble referencing the same variable while inside a function:

Code:

_root.ButtonMovie.onRelease = function() {
this(variable);
}

I really need to reference the variable while INSIDE the onRelease function, because I need to apply some actions based on how many times the button has been pressed.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Referencing A Button On Main Stage From Inside A Movieclip?

Nov 22, 2009

On the main stage I have a button that I have made invisible once the file is loaded.  Inside a movieclip I have on frame 15 the following actionscript 3 code

button_mc.visible = true;

I want the button to become visible at the end of this movieclip.  I am not using an external as3 file, I am putting the as3 code in its own layer on the first frame.

I know it has something to do with the path to the button, but I cannot figure it out.  If there is anyone who can point me in the right direction for referencing instances by instance name that reside on the main satge from inside a movieclip

ActionScript 2.0 :: Why Do Movieclips Inside Movieclips Have Different _x And _y Than The Timeline

Oct 30, 2007

why does a MC inside another MC have different _x and _y values than the main timeline?What I am trying to do right now is animate a MC inside another MC then get the main MC holding everything to move where that new MC ended animating at (it's part of a game I'm making.)

I know it's confusing but Flash shows the cursors current X and Y in the info panel, which is the same as the main timeline. Yet inside the movieclip, an x of 76 and a y of 277 on the timeline is -195 and -30.9 (respectively) inside the MC.How do I fix it so I can get the _x and _y values to match up so I can tell the main MC to reposition itself to the new X and Y (of the inside MC)

ActionScript 2.0 :: MovieClips Inside Other MovieClips - Detecting All

Mar 27, 2008

I have a movieclip called mapWindow, inside mapWindow are dynamically created movieclips of various sizes. The movieclips inside the mapWindow don't take up the entire space of the mapWindow and thus I use a startDrag on the mapWindow upon detection of a mouse press. The problem is, I don't want the start drag to start if the mouse is detected over any of the child movieclips inside mapWindow.

I have a few ideas of how to proceed, but I'm not sure how to reference all child movieclips of a particular movieclip - or something along those lines.

It would be easy to use the hittest function if I knew how to reference all the movieclips I need to, but alas...

ActionScript 3.0 :: Referencing Movieclip In Array

Jun 13, 2011

Just learning as3. For testing purposes, I duplicated a movieclip 4 times on the stage and gave each mc a different instance name and put them in an array ("line1","line2","line3","line4"). Then I just want one movieclip to move 200 pixels based on the conditions of the array. Here is the code:

var stuff:Array = new Array("line1","line2","line3","line4");
for(var i:int=0;i<stuff.length;i++)
{
if ((stuff[i]) == "line4") {
trace(stuff[i]);
var duke = (stuff[i]);
[duke]y += 200;
}
}

It traces out the correct mc (line4) but ALL the movieclips move 200 pixels instead of the one (line4). Do you know why this is? I have a feeling that [duke]y is not the correct way to reference the movieclip.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Referencing To Array In Parent?

Jan 4, 2007

I have an array defined in the main timeline to store some values. At some point of time, I am dynamically adding a movieclip to stage using attachMovie and then using a movieClip.onEnterFrame event to set one of its values by referencing to one value from the main array.(Sorry if the following description sounds a bit confusing. I am attaching a part of the code below to help describe the situation) The problem is that it is not able to retrieve the value from the main array no matter what I try. I tried adding a "_root" befor the array name and the index array id but it did not work. Not only that but the trace shows that it is able to retrieve the index id as well as the full array but not any particular value from the array - as in, trace(arrayname) outputs all the values from that array but trace(arrayname[a][b][c]) gives an output 'undefined'.

I have managed to make it work by creating a temporary variable to store that particular value just before the onEnterFrame event kicks in, but I would love to know why it is not working the way I thought it should. Here is a part of the code. If someone needs more info about the code then please ask and I will give it in the next post (The full code is way too large to be posted here)

ActionScript Code:
//------In main timeline
var movesNum:Number = 0;

[code].....
